Among the three aspects of showing the distinction between the mundane and the supramundane, with regard to the first, it is said: "At that time, he obtains the cause of perfect enlightenment, the first, generosity, becomes supreme." At the time of obtaining the first generation of bodhicitta, the cause of the perfect enlightenment of that son of the Victorious One, the first of the ten perfections, generosity itself, becomes supreme, because all the opposing factors of the perfection of generosity are abandoned. The other perfections are not non-existent in this ground. Even giving away one's own flesh is done with reverence, and it also becomes a cause for inferring the invisible qualities. At that time, the bodhisattva, by practicing generosity especially, what need is there to mention giving all possessions to others, even cutting off one's own flesh and giving it to beggars is done with reverence, and the special actions of body and speech, such as realizing the all-pervadingness of the realm of phenomena, also become a cause for inferring other invisible qualities of the first ground, because if one has not realized the all-pervadingness of the realm of phenomena, and has not understood the equality of self and others, one will not be reverent in giving one's own flesh for the sake of others. Incidentally, showing the praise of generosity also has two aspects: the praise of the generosity of others and the special praise of the generosity of bodhisattvas. With regard to the first, it is said: "All these beings desire manifest happiness, and people's happiness is not without enjoyment, and knowing that enjoyment also arises from generosity, therefore the Buddha first spoke of generosity." It is said that all these beings who are attached to distorted appearances desire only the happiness of eliminating suffering such as hunger, thirst, heat, and cold, and that the happiness of people merely eliminating suffering does not arise without enjoyment such as food and clothing, and knowing that those enjoyments that become the cause of eliminating suffering also arise from the merit of generosity. Therefore, the Muni, the Bhagavan, knowing the nature of the thoughts of all sentient beings, first spoke to the trainees about the praise of generosity, as well as discipline and so on.

Even if generosity can lead to enjoyment, how can enjoyment arise from the generosity of those who do not accord with the proper conduct of a giver, who abandon the thought of benefiting others, and who give only a small amount of wealth for their own sake, yet desire a great fruition? Although the giver does not accord with the proper conduct, it is to show that generosity produces a result that is in accordance with itself. It is said: "Those who are deficient in compassion and extremely harsh, who are solely concerned with their own benefit, even their desired enjoyments, become the cause of pacifying suffering, arising from generosity." This means that the giver, being deficient in compassion, abandons the thought of benefiting others, and being dominated by anger, is extremely harsh. Those who are solely concerned with their own benefit, like merchants, give a small amount of wealth, desiring a great heap of wealth as its result. Even the objects of merit that arise from their generosity will become the source of food, clothing, and other enjoyments that will pacify the suffering of hunger and thirst in the future. The commentary explains the meaning of "Their objects arising from generosity become the cause of enjoyments that pacify suffering" in this way. Thus, generosity is shown to be the cause of higher realms, and it will certainly become the cause of goodness as well. For example: "Also, at what time of generosity, will one quickly meet with noble beings? Then, having completely cut off the continuum of existence, one will go to peace, the cause of that." Because the scriptures say that the giver, the benefactor, is where the holy ones go, even this giver who does not accord with the proper conduct, if he has faith in generosity, then at some time of generosity, he will quickly meet with noble beings. And then, from what they have shown, realizing that there is no virtue in samsara, he will directly realize the stainless noble path, abandoning ignorance, and completely cut off the continuum of existence that passes from one birth to another. He will then attain peace, the result of that noble path, nirvana. Thus, even the generosity of those who are not yet Bodhisattvas can bring about higher realms and
