Furthermore, the five, such as the eye, generally show the transformation from the great elements, and the functions of these are different objects. The eye sees form, but does not hear sound; the ear hears sound, but does not see form. When it is like that, the eye is changing, and so is the ear. When the eye sees and others do not, how can the eye and others know the object? Because it is unreasonable. If the eye and others do not exist, then how are these established as the nature of the ripening of karma? We here prevent the establishment of the self-nature of all things, but do not prevent the ripening of karma that arises dependently, such as the eye. Then, will there be faults such as the eye is changing? No, because the ripening of karma such as good and evil cannot be conceived by reason, because the Able One (Buddha) has said that it is inconceivable. As the sutra says: Because the ripening of sentient beings' karma is inconceivable, the wind causes all changes in this world to arise, the sea and the mountains and the immeasurable palace of the gods, adorned with jewels, seeds are scattered, etc. The clouds produced by the wind bring rain, and again the wind can destroy the clouds, the wind makes the world's crops flourish, and the wind brings happiness to all beings. And so on. Thus, everything in the world should be accepted. If the eye and others are self-existent, because their result is the seeing consciousness. If consciousness is established by its own nature, then the eye and others should exist, but that is not the case. Thus, before seeing, there is no eye consciousness, because the causal condition of the owner is not complete. However, if it is thought that it exists after seeing, then seeing form is meaningless for consciousness, because seeing already exists before it does. However, if it is thought that the three thoughts of seeing and consciousness arise simultaneously, then when eye consciousness arises, the action of seeing will become meaningless, because they arise simultaneously, like the left and right horns of a cow. When it is like that, when consciousness does not exist, it is impossible to establish that the eye and others exist. If the eye is not the nature of the agent, then what is it? It is the agent of seeing...

It is the nature. So, if it is said that "the action of a third party becomes meaningless" is unreasonable, why is that? When the eye sees an object, does the eye go to the place of the object? Or does it see without going? If the eye grasps after contacting the object, and has the ability to go to the place of the object, then things like the moon and stars that are in distant places should be seen after a long time, not in an instant. But because things in distant places are seen in an instant, as if they were nearby, this is unreasonable. If the eye grasps after contact, then why can't it clearly grasp things that are very close to the eye, such as eye medicine and eyelid plates, and objects that are very far away? Because the contact is the same. This is not the way things exist, so it is unreasonable. Furthermore, if the eye sees an object from the outside, does it go after seeing the object, or does it go without seeing it? If it is thought that the eye goes to that object's place after seeing the object, then for the sake of seeing the object, the eye going to the place of the object is meaningless, because before it goes, it has already seen it because that object exists here. If it goes without seeing, then the statement that "the object one wants to see will surely be seen" becomes false, because like a blind person, one does not see the object one wants to see. If one wants to avoid that fault and thinks that the eye can grasp without going to the place of the object, then the eye that is merely here will be able to see all things that are near and far, and obscured and unobscured, because for whichever eye there is no possibility of going to the place of the object, and it can grasp without contact, then for it, things are neither distant nor obscured, because all things are the same without contact. So, what does it mean that the scriptures say that the eye, consciousness, and ear do not contact the object? That is to prevent contact, not to prove no contact, because it is harmed by the reasoning as described above, and the Tathagata would not say things that contradict reasoning. Furthermore, when the eye is of the nature of seeing, because the nature does not disappear at any time, it will also see its own essence, just as the nature of all things in the world first appears to oneself, like a flower.
