How then does the consciousness that distinguishes the particularities of those causes that specifically distinguish things arise? If things had inherent existence, then consciousness could distinguish them. But, since things do not have inherent existence, how could there be a consciousness that distinguishes them? So, is consciousness completely non-existent? It is not non-existent, because there is a way in which there is no inherent existence. For example, when eye consciousness arises in dependence on the eye and form, and when that consciousness arises and ceases, it ceases together with the objects and sense faculties. When that ceases, later, the mind consciousness grasps whatever object, such as the form that was previously seen. How does it grasp an object that has already ceased? Just as in a mirage, even though there is not even a trace of water, nevertheless, due to the power of causes and conditions, a consciousness with the appearance of water arises, so too, for an object that has ceased and has no inherent existence, a consciousness with discrimination distinguishes and discerns, saying, "This is blue, this is yellow, this is pleasing, this is displeasing." Such a thing is called the aggregate of consciousness, which is the cause for specifically distinguishing all phenomena, such as form and feeling. The specific distinctions of the nature of phenomena and their detailed classifications, etc., are also due to the power of consciousness, and not due to the cause of the inherent nature of things themselves, because everything is like an illusion and cannot distinguish its own nature. Therefore, the cause for distinguishing all phenomena from form to omniscience is only consciousness, which is the nature of discrimination. Therefore, it is very clear that all conventional truths are merely imputed by discrimination. The object that is the basis of imputation and the appearance of the mind, like an illusion, are merely illusions arising from the power of ignorance, like the appearance of hair for one with blurred vision. Its essence is like the sky, not abiding in any extreme, and beyond the scope of knowledge and expression. Just as applying eye medicine removes blurred vision and the appearance of hair disappears, so too, when the blurred vision of ignorance is removed by the eye medicine of emptiness, it ceases on its own. Therefore, the Dharmakaya and Nirvana of the Buddhas are

It should be understood that in all appearances and so on, there is no characteristic, like the nature of space. Those who are not afraid of such a realm and generate joy, and who have the desire to abide in such a realm, are the ones who truly seek liberation. If someone hears this and becomes frightened and says, "What is the use of attaining such liberation?" those whose minds are scattered outward do not even have the slightest desire for liberation, so how can the path of liberation arise in their minds? Secondly, if it is said that consciousness is inherently existent, and without it, phenomena cannot be established, then consciousness is also like consciousness, because it has the same nature, so there is nothing other than consciousness. But consciousness is not inherently existent either. For example: From seeds that are destroyed and not destroyed, sprouts do not arise. All your arising is said to be like an illusion. As it is said, when the mind's consciousness arises in dependence on the eye and form, it does not arise from a cause that has already ceased, because something unreal cannot be a cause. Nor does it arise from a cause that has not ceased, because if cause and effect exist simultaneously, it would follow that they are not mutually dependent. Therefore, just as a sprout arises from an illusory seed, it will only arise as a mistaken appearance. If this were inherently existent, then for something that has inherent existence, it should not be called an illusion, just as a real woman in the world is not called an illusion. Consciousness arises in the manner of an illusion, and the sutras also say that consciousness is like an illusion, therefore consciousness has no inherent existence. Thirdly, explaining that non-reality is the cause of wonder. Since it is impossible for the senses to grasp objects, and the eye consciousness arises in dependence on the eye and form, is this not wonderful? This is not only the cause of wonder, for example: Sprouts do not arise from seeds that are destroyed and not destroyed, but sprouts arise in dependence on seeds; and the karma that has been created and accumulated, after it has been destroyed and a long time has passed, nothing exists, but now the result arises; and pots and so on, when searching for their own immediate cause in five ways, cannot be found, and relying on
