Explanation of Chapter Thirteen. Explanation of Chapter Thirteen. Third, refuting the object of the senses. Refuting the inherent truth of all phenomena, and the two that are similar to unreal illusions, etc. In the first, refuting the truth of the object of the senses that is apprehended, refuting the truth of the subject that apprehends, and showing the unreal as the cause of wonder, etc., are three. In the first, there are two: a general refutation and a separate analysis and refutation. In the first, there are three: the actual refutation, the conclusion of the refutation, and the presentation of other reasons. The first is: The meaning of reason, even from others, Those with intelligence should take it because they desire goodness. What is the reason that has been spoken of as something to be taken? It is seeing that the external and internal phenomena are without self-nature. If it is said that one cannot realize that phenomena are without self-nature, it is because the nature of things like pots and blue, etc., is directly perceived. If it is said that things like rabbit horns, which do not exist, are not directly perceived, that is not reasonable either. Just as one relies on grass and trees, etc., to build a house, and relies on the aggregates to impute a self, one relies on the four elements and the eight substances that are produced from them to impute a pot. When the eye sees a form, it does not see only all the parts of the pot, because the pot is the nature of the eight substances, and the eye sees form, not smell, etc., because the objects are different. Therefore, worldly people, without examining, take their own understanding as a measure and say whatever they please, "I have directly perceived the pot." If one says, "The pot is directly perceived," and thinks that seeing one part is seeing all, what wise person who understands reality would say that? It is not appropriate to say that. Furthermore, the word "also" shows that even the proximate cause of the pot, such as blue, etc., is not directly perceived. With this very reasoning that refutes the pot as being directly perceived, a wise person with supreme intelligence would understand that all the objects of the nose sense, such as fragrant jasmine flowers, lotuses, utpalas, sandalwood, etc., and all the objects of the tongue sense, such as sweet sugarcane, salt, and neem, etc., and all the objects of the body sense, such as soft cotton, sand, and stones, etc., are directly perceived.

It should also be understood separately the refutations of them. Like this, because they are also the nature of the eight substances, therefore the senses that have self-nature, also only grasp their respective objects, because they do not grasp everything, so it is said that cotton flowers and brown sugar etc. are direct perception, this is only a worldly saying. Which wise person who understands suchness would say this? If it is said that because the vase is not different from the color, so seeing the color will see all the vases, this is also meaningless. Like this, if only seeing the color, will see all the parts of the vase that can be seen, then, because the other seven substances such as smell are not seen, why not think that seeing the color is also not seeing? In the world, it is also common to see most of the sayings, such as there are pea pods etc., but because of the large number, it is said to be a pile of pea pods. If it is said that the vase does not have direct perception, but the color of the vase has direct perception, therefore through indirect means, the vase will also become direct perception, then, only the color itself that is not related to smell etc., also does not have direct perception. Because that color has the outer back part, the inner front part and the middle center part etc., and those parts also have other parts of the previous outer, inner and middle, and those parts also have other, those parts also have other, distinguishing like this, will eventually reach the ultimate atom. For the atom, there are also outer, inner and middle parts, or not, such analysis will also enter there. If it is said that there are front and back parts etc., then, therefore the atom will also be destroyed like the vase etc. If it is said that there are no parts, then because it cannot be grasped, it will become non-existent. Second, because it is like this, therefore direct perception is not established, and with the things that need to be established, it is also not appropriate to establish the things with self-nature that others think need to be established. Third, in addition, if you observe all the objects of the colored root, then all the objects depend on their own limbs, become limbs, and then depend on their own limbs, become limbs. For example, the vase is the eight substances of its own proximate cause.
