The merit of all beings on earth becoming Chakravartin kings is not as excellent as the merit of a Bodhisattva's first ground, the Extremely Joyful. Because it is the seed from which all mundane and supramundane roots of virtue arise, it is the cause of taking care of all beings as long as samsara exists. And the merit of the Chakravartin is only the cause of the happiness of some beings in a short time. Second, the merit of causing others to generate Bodhicitta. If the merit of generating one's own Bodhicitta is spoken of, then what is the merit of causing others to generate Bodhicitta? For the sake of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, a stupa made of gold and vaidurya and other seven jewels, with their relics as the core, as high as the Akanishta heaven, and as wide as the three thousand great thousand worlds, is built by some. And on it are hung matching umbrellas and jeweled staircases, and for kalpas it is offered with various offerings such as flowers, incense, dances, and songs. This is not as good as someone who, for the sake of enlightenment, causes a single sentient being to generate Bodhicitta and tames him. The latter, who tames a single sentient being for the sake of enlightenment, is said to have supreme merit. Because the former only creates a place for the Tathagata to dwell, while the latter does the work of ensuring that the Buddha's lineage is not interrupted and that the Dharma remains in the world for a long time. Secondly, Bodhisattvas with conventional Bodhicitta do not tame sentient beings through the practice of Bodhicitta, but through thinking about the intention of altruistic actions, because afflictions are strong, antidotes are weak, and they do not know how to tame sentient beings according to their faculties and latent thoughts. But Bodhisattvas with ultimate Bodhicitta should only focus on benefiting sentient beings, for reasons contrary to the former. How does this Bodhisattva benefit sentient beings? Their thought

Therefore, it is named accordingly to be in accordance with the (Buddha) Mother. Therefore, a lama who wishes to benefit a disciple should first serve the disciple with generosity, kind speech, and so on, in order to make the disciple have faith in him. Once faith has arisen, then he should be accepted by giving teachings and instructions that are appropriate to the disciple's capacity. For example, an elephant trainer first gives an elephant grass, sugar, and other foods, and then begins to use it. After that, it is like driving it with a hook of taming. Shouldn't the disciple serve the lama? How should the lama serve the disciple? That is true. But this is because a foolish person does not understand that he should serve the lama for his own benefit. Because the disciple does not know what is beneficial and what is not, he needs to be instructed, and therefore he is called a disciple. Even if service is performed, if the disciple is not respectful and instead argues back, etc., doing unreasonable things, one should not be discouraged by this. Because one must destroy the afflictions that make one's character bad. For example, some patients possessed by spirits become angry and scold, but the doctor does not get angry at them. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, who are skilled in the methods of taming sentient beings, see the afflictions that make sentient beings unruly as faults, but do not see the person associated with the afflictions as having faults. In this way, without frustrating the thoughts of others and accomplishing things in accordance with them, when the disciple becomes very devoted, one should give teachings that are appropriate to his capacity. For example, to a miserly person, speak of generosity; to an angry person, speak of patience; to an immoral person, he does not like to hear the teachings of discipline; to one who desires enjoyment, speak of generosity; to one who desires higher realms, speak of discipline; to one who desires a beautiful appearance, speak of patience, so that they will be pleased. Therefore, for any being that needs to be tamed, one should first understand in detail what they like, such as generosity, and then guide them with what they most desire. Later, when they become vessels, then teach the profound Dharma. Do not impose on them what they do not like at the beginning. Because if one makes them unhappy with disagreeable words at the beginning, thereby causing their continuum to deteriorate, then how can they become a vessel for the holy Dharma?
