I cannot say that it (the self) is permanent or impermanent, because this would lead to many faults. If I (self-nature) were permanent, then it would fall into the assertion of permanence; if I were impermanent, then it would fall into the assertion of annihilation. Both permanence and annihilation cause great errors, so they should not be accepted. Furthermore, if the aggregates are the self, then the aggregates themselves would become the taker, because the action and the actor are the same. In this way, the cutter and the cut, as well as the potter and the pot, would also become the same. Third, although the aggregates alone are not the self, if it is said that the taker is different from the aggregates, that is also not acceptable. Because: I am not of a different nature from the aggregates. If it were another entity, even without taking, it should exist, like a pot and clothing. I am not a different entity from the aggregates. If I were another entity from the aggregates, then just like a pot and cloth, even without the aggregates, I should be able to be cognized. But this is not the case. Fourth: Therefore, with the aggregates, not different, not one, I am not without taking, therefore know this. In this way, it would lead to the fault of being able to exist independently without relying on the aggregates. I am not another entity from the aggregates, otherwise it would lead to the aggregates and the taker becoming one, and it would lead to the fault of arising and ceasing. I am not the nature of the aggregates, and it would lead to the fault of being able to be cognized without the aggregates, therefore I am also not without the aggregates. In this way, if one thinks, "I am non-existent," that is also uncertain. I am also not non-existent, because I am established in dependence on the aggregates. A non-existent thing, such as the son of a barren woman, is not established in dependence on the aggregates. Since the aggregates exist, how could there be no taker? Therefore, I cannot even be considered non-existent merely in name. Second, refuting that I did not exist in the past, divided into two: First, establishing the thesis: Not born in the past, This saying is unreasonable, Born in previous lives, This is not different from that. I in the past

It is unreasonable to say "did not arise." If this present self is different from the previous self, then would it become something that did not arise in the past? Because this present self is not different from the self that arose in previous lives. Secondly, explaining the proof: If this is different from the previous self, what fault would there be? If this becomes different, then it would arise even without it. Similarly, it would change its state, and would be born there without dying. If this present self becomes different from the previous self, then, because it is different, just as cloth does not disappear when a pot is made, even when the later self is born, the previous self would not cease, and because it has not ceased, then when it was born in various lives such as gods and humans, the colors and shapes that were previously identified, that self would exist as it is now, and would only be born here without dying in the previous life, then, this one who has become a human would exist like the previous god self, which is also unreasonable. If the previous self does not exist and arises here, what fault would there be? There would be many faults, like this: annihilation and actions would be wasted, the actions done by others would be experienced separately by others, and so on. If this present self arises without the previous self, then, because the previous self disappeared there, and another was born here, the previous self would be annihilated. If the self is annihilated, then the fruits of actions would ultimately be completely cut off because the basis is cut off, and because there is no profound cause, the results would only be wasted. If it is thought that the later self enjoys the fruits of actions done by the previous self, then the fruits of actions done by others would be enjoyed and experienced separately by others. Therefore, there would be consequences such as encountering actions not done. Furthermore, this present self is different from the previous self.
