Explanation of Chapter Twenty-Seven Explanation of Chapter Twenty-Seven Fifth, explaining the benefits of realizing dependent origination, which is divided into two parts: a summary and a detailed explanation. The first is the summary: If someone truly sees such dependent origination as it is, they will not rely on the extreme of the past, nor will they rely on the extreme of the future. This is a quote from the sutra. So, what is the extreme of the past? What is the extreme of the future? How does one not rely on them? In this regard, in relation to the current object of self, past bodies are called the extreme of the past. Not relying on it is because one sees the suchness of dependent origination as it is, and therefore one does not cling to objects that exist in other ways with various views, thinking that they appear in other ways. Among them, there are eight views that engage in other ways by focusing on the extreme of the past, like this: "Did it exist or not exist in the past?" and "The world is permanent," etc. Whatever views there are, those are dependent on the extreme of the past. Did I exist in the past? Or did I not exist? Did I both exist and not exist? Or was it neither existing nor not existing? These four views are dependent on the extreme of the past. There are also four others: "The world is permanent," and so on, meaning impermanent; both permanent and impermanent; neither permanent nor impermanent. Whatever views there are, those are also dependent on the extreme of the past. Among these, the latter set of four views is not much different from the former set of four views, but they are listed separately based on slight differences. For example, the difference between "The world is permanent" and "Did it exist in the past?" is that the former generally relies on the extreme of the past, while the latter engages by focusing only on the extreme of one's own past. Similarly, the differences should be explained for the other views as well. So, what is relying on the extreme of the future? In relation to the current object of self, the body that will arise is called the extreme of the future. Not relying on it is because of dependent origination.
