The departed said: Oneself is one's own protector, who else could be the protector? Through perfect self-discipline, the wise will attain higher realms. Thus, the deeds of black and white will not perish; one will experience what one has done. How does this not contradict the extensive teachings like, "Here, there is no self or sentient being; these phenomena all have causes"? Similarly, why didn't the Bhagavan say, "All phenomena are without self"? Therefore, we must seek the intention of the Bhagavan's teachings. The Bhagavan generally, in the scriptures, sometimes affirmed the existence of self and sometimes taught the absence of self. The Buddhas sometimes taught the existence of self and sometimes taught the absence of self. The intention is this: The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, with great compassion, wish to guide beings of inferior, intermediate, and superior capacities. For those inferior beings whose minds are obscured by the darkness of wrong views, who engage in denouncing the past and future, saying, "This world does not exist, the ripening of the fruits of good and bad deeds does not exist, beings arising miraculously do not exist," and so on, thus denouncing the next life and the self, turning their backs on the path to higher realms and liberation, and constantly engaging in evil and unwholesome deeds, in order to turn them away from unwholesomeness, sometimes it is said, "Oneself is one's own protector, who else could be the protector?" Thus, the existence of self is affirmed and established. For those intermediate beings who possess worldly right view, engage in virtue and refrain from non-virtue, but are tightly bound by the thread of truly seeing a self, unable to transcend the three realms and reach the peaceful city of Nirvana, in order to loosen their attachment to the view of aggregates and to generate a desire for Nirvana, sometimes it is said, "Here, there is no self or sentient being; these phenomena should be understood as having causes." Thus, the absence of self is taught. For those who, due to the distinction of past habits, have a deep

Having a special faith in the Dharma, the seeds related to it are fully ripened, attaining Nirvana, and dwelling near Nirvana. Having abandoned attachment to self, being able to fathom the profound depths of the meaning of the Sutras spoken by the Lord of Sages (Buddha), for those most excellent disciples, it is necessary to grasp the characteristics of their special faith. Just as viewing as self is not a correct view, similarly, as its antidote, viewing as no-self is also not correct. O Avalokiteśvara, the so-called self is one extreme. The so-called no-self is two extremes. What is the middle way between these two extremes? It is formlessness, invisibility, without support, without appearance, without discriminating consciousness, without a place. O Avalokiteśvara, this is the Middle Way, which means to correctly distinguish all dharmas. Therefore, the Buddhas have also taught that there is neither a so-called self nor a so-called no-self. In the Ratnavali (Precious Garland), it is also said: Thus, self and no-self cannot be observed as they truly are. The views of self and no-self are therefore prohibited by the Great Sage (Buddha). The Sage (Buddha) said that seeing and hearing, etc., are neither true nor false. Because of disagreeing with one side and turning to the other, neither of these two is the ultimate meaning. Thus it was proclaimed. Because the disciples have different capacities, such as inferior, intermediate, and superior, and their thoughts are also different, therefore, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, teach the Dharma by affirming self and no-self, and by negating both. Therefore, the Madhyamikas are not harmed by scriptural authority. For this very reason, Aryadeva said: First, turn away from non-merit, in the middle, turn away from self, and finally, turn away from the basis of all views. Whoever understands this is a wise person. Moreover, the teacher (Nagarjuna) also said: Just as grammarians guide people to read the model of letters, similarly, the Buddha teaches the Dharma according to the capacity of the disciples. For some, the Dharma is taught to liberate them from sins. For some, to accomplish merit. For some, both (self and no-self) are taught. For some, neither is taught. Deep and hidden, frightening, with the essence of emptiness and compassion, for some to achieve Bodhi. Thus it is proclaimed. Or, this is another meaning, the sound of Saṃskṛta (conditioned phenomena)
