Commentary on Chapter Eighteen. Commentary on Chapter Eighteen. Chapter Eighteen, on the examination of self, is divided into: the way to enter Suchness, refuting doctrinal contradictions to it, the order of teaching Suchness, the nature of Suchness, and the five excellences of Suchness. The first part is further divided into the main text and the teaching of its result—Nirvana. The first part is: Here it is said, if afflictions, karma, body, agent, and results, etc., are like Gandharva cities, etc., although they are not Suchness, they appear to children as Suchness. Then, what is Suchness here? And how does one enter Suchness? For internal and external phenomena, since there is no grasping of self-nature, therefore the complete cessation of the clinging to self and what belongs to self towards them, this is Suchness. The way to enter Suchness is: as stated in the *Entering the Middle Way*: "All afflictions and faults are seen by the wise to arise from the view of the collection; therefore, this yogi should first refute the self, because this is the object of my clinging, so he should exert himself." As it is said, here the yogi wants to enter Suchness, wants to eliminate all afflictions and faults, therefore he will first contemplate what the root of samsara is. After such examination, he will see that the root of samsara is the view of the collection, and he will also see that the self is the object of the view of the collection. Because of not clinging to the self, one can eliminate the view of the collection, and by eliminating the view of the collection, one can stop all afflictions and faults. Therefore, one will first contemplate what exactly is this "self," which is the object of clinging to self. Further examining this "self," is it the nature of the aggregates, or is it something अलग(梵文天城体,alaga,梵文罗马拟音,alaga, separate) from the aggregates? If the aggregates are the self, then it will have birth and death. If one thinks that the aggregates are the nature of the self, then this self will have birth and death, because the aggregates depend on birth and death. But we do not think so, because there would be many faults. For example: "Not born from non-existence, therefore a fault is established here, the self would become something made, and birth would also become without cause." Similarly, "The aggregates themselves are not the self,

It is. That is arising and ceasing. How is it taken? It will become taken. As it is explained. Therefore, the aggregates are not self. It is also not permissible to be different from the aggregates, for if it is other than the aggregates, there will be no characteristic of the aggregates. If the self is something other than the aggregates, just as a horse other than a cow does not become the characteristic of a cow, so too, the self should not have the general characteristic of the aggregates, the characteristic of arising, ceasing, and abiding. Whatever is like that, it is non-existent, or it is unconditioned, therefore, like a flower in the sky, it is not possible to find it spoken of as self, and it is not appropriate as an object of self-grasping. Or, there is another meaning to this: if the self is other than the aggregates, the five aggregates are of the nature of being form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness that distinguishes each object, then the self will not have the nature of the aggregates as described, and it will be established as having a different nature, and if it is established as having a different nature, it will be possible to grasp it like the mind from form, but it is not grasping. Therefore, it does not exist as being different from the aggregates. Thus, those who desire liberation, when they analyze whether this self, which is imputed in dependence on the aggregates, is of the nature of the aggregates or is different from the aggregates, because it is not found in any way, therefore, for them, if the self itself does not exist, how can there be mine? If the aggregates do not have the nature of being one or different, then how can there be mine, the nature of the five aggregates, which is the cause of imputing self? Just as when a chariot is burned, its parts are also burned and cannot be found, so too, when one realizes the selflessness of self, at that very time, one will surely realize that the nature of the five aggregates, mine, is also selfless. As it is said in the Ratnavali: The aggregates arise from self-grasping, that self-grasping is false in meaning, if its seed is false, how can its birth be true? Having seen the aggregates as untrue in that way, one will abandon self-grasping. Having abandoned those who grasp at self, later the aggregates will not arise. Thus it is said.
