Because of not clinging to self and what belongs to self, one sees the ultimate truth. The close yogi will certainly eliminate self-grasping and grasping at what belongs to self because of the pacification of self and what belongs to self. The object of self-grasping, "I," and the object of grasping at what belongs to self, "what belongs to me"—the aggregates, etc.—are pacified, that is, unborn and unfindable, so the yogi will not have self-grasping and grasping at what belongs to self. If that yogi who has no self-grasping and no grasping at what belongs to self does not exist, and if he exists, then self and the aggregates are also established, then: That which has no self-grasping and no grasping at what belongs to self, that also does not exist. Because there is no self-grasping and no grasping at what belongs to self, by what seeing does one not see? As explained above, because self and the aggregates are unfindable in every way, therefore, whatever becomes free from self-grasping and grasping at what belongs to self, that which is different from self and the aggregates also does not exist. Therefore, one should know that with this nonexistent nature, without self-grasping and grasping at what belongs to self, by what seeing does one not see the suchness that is free from all elaboration? As the Bhagavan said: 'Look at the emptiness of the inner self, look at the emptiness of what has become external. Whoever meditates on emptiness, that one also does not exist at all.' As it is said. Secondly, therefore, when the thought of self and what belongs to self ceases in the inner and outer realms, appropriation ceases, and when that ceases, birth ceases. All afflictions have the view of the perishable collection as their root, the arising of the view of the perishable collection, and the cause of the view of the perishable collection, as it is said in the sutra. And the view of the perishable collection is also because the thought of self and what belongs to self ceases in the inner and outer objects, the aggregates, elements, and sense bases. Regarding the meaning of self and what belongs to self, the teacher Sthiramati explained that the Samkhyas and others who consider the self to be conscious regard the four name aggregates as self and form, etc., as what belongs to self. The Vaisheshikas and others who consider the self to be a substance regard the form aggregate as self and the other four as what belongs to self. In the place where the twenty views of the perishable collection are explained, the five, from form is self to consciousness is self, are regarded as self, and the remaining fifteen, such as self is associated with form, etc., are what belongs to self.

Because views are not fixated upon, they will be abandoned. When those are abandoned, the four kinds of clinging, such as clinging to desire, will also cease. When clinging is exhausted, birth, which is characterized by renewed existence, will be exhausted. Because the order of the cessation of birth is thus established, liberation is attained by the exhaustion of karma and afflictions. Thus, if clinging is exhausted, existence, which is conditioned by it, will not arise. If clinging and existence cease, birth, aging, and death, etc., will not occur. Thus, it abides in the statement: "Liberation is attained by the exhaustion of karma and afflictions." Then, by what does karma and affliction become exhausted? Karma and affliction arise from conceptual thought. These elaborations arise from elaboration. Therefore, they will cease through emptiness. Meritorious and non-meritorious karma, and afflictions such as desire, arise from improperly attending to and conceptually thinking about forms, etc. As it is said: "Desire, hatred, and delusion are said to arise from conceptualization." It is also explained in the sutra: "Desire, your root, is known to arise from conceptual thought. You will not conceptualize me, therefore you will not arise in me." These conceptual thoughts also arise from elaboration, such as knowledge and the object of knowledge, the expresser and the expressed, pots and cloths, etc., which are characterized by habituation from beginningless samsara. All worldly elaboration will also cease by viewing all things as empty. Because emptiness thus relies on the nature of completely pacifying all elaboration, it becomes separated from elaboration. Being separated from elaboration, conceptual thought ceases, and when conceptual thought ceases, karma and afflictions cease. When these cease, birth ceases. Therefore, emptiness alone is the nature of ceasing all elaboration, and is called nirvana. As it is said in the *Sata-sastra*: "In brief, the Tathagatas proclaim that the Dharma is non-harming. Emptiness is nirvana; here, there are only these two." Second, refuting scriptural contradictions to this: If the thought of "I" and "mine" is exhausted internally and externally, and that is suchness, then the Blessed One
