This is about the inner and outer divisions of the paths and grounds. Firstly, there are two types: inner and outer individuals, and inner and outer tenets. The difference between inner and outer individuals is: an individual who takes refuge in the Three Jewels is called an inner person, while an individual who takes refuge in outer deities such as Vishnu and Brahma is an outer person. Therefore, the difference between inner and outer individuals is distinguished by actions such as taking refuge, not by views, because there are many inner and outer individuals who do not understand the view. The difference between inner and outer tenets is mainly distinguished by views: any scripture that teaches either of the two extremes of permanence or annihilation, and which contains many faults, is an outer tenet, because their view has deviated from the Middle Way that avoids permanence and annihilation. Any scripture that teaches the avoidance of the extremes of permanence and annihilation and intends to explain the Middle Way is an inner tenet. Therefore, all four tenet proponents consider themselves to hold the correct tenet, because they all want to follow the Middle Way that avoids permanence and annihilation, as taught by the Buddha. Among them, each tenet proponent has its own different way of avoiding permanence and annihilation. For example, the Vaibhashikas believe that conditioned phenomena are destroyed in an instant, thus avoiding the extreme of permanence, and because they continue without interruption, they avoid the extreme of annihilation. The Sautrantikas say that causes are liberated from the extreme of permanence by ceasing their own nature, and they are liberated from the extreme of annihilation by producing a result that is in accordance with themselves. The Cittamatrins believe that the completely imputed has no inherent existence, thus avoiding the extreme of permanence, while the dependent is truly established, thus avoiding the extreme of annihilation. The Madhyamikas believe that they do not deny the conventional as it appears like an illusion, thus liberating from the extreme of annihilation, while the reality itself is free from all extremes of elaboration, thus liberating from the extreme of permanence, which is the fundamental Middle Way. With wisdom, one does not grasp any phenomena as signs, thus liberating from the extreme of permanence, and with compassion, one accumulates vast accumulations for the benefit of others, thus liberating from the extreme of annihilation, which is the path Middle Way. Attaining the Dharmakaya, in which all elaborative signs are pacified, thus liberating from the extreme of permanence, with the two form bodies to

Therefore, as long as samsara is not empty, one continues to act, thereby being liberated from the extreme of annihilation. That itself is the fruit of the Middle Way. Thus, the first three are similar to the Middle Way, while the latter is characterized by the nature of the Middle Way. Those who are distinguished as outsiders solely by their view are the two schools of Shravakas and the Mind-Only school. Because they accept things as truly existent, they will fall into the extremes of permanence and annihilation regarding the way things exist. As the noble Nagarjuna said: If existence is accepted, then there will be fears such as annihilation. And, if it exists by its own nature, then it cannot be considered non-existent. Saying that it existed before but does not exist now, therefore, it would entail the fault of annihilation. Thus it was said. Therefore, they also did not understand the Buddha's intention as it is, so they are called outsiders distinguished by their view. The Madhyamikas, on the other hand, understand the Tathagata's intention, the Middle Way that abandons permanence and annihilation, as it is, so they are also called insiders distinguished by their view. Those who are distinguished as outsiders by the path of means are all the practitioners of the Paramita Vehicle. The insiders are the practitioners of the Vajrayana. What is the difference between loving-kindness, great compassion, and compassion? The differences between loving-kindness and great compassion are explained in the 'Treasury of Eight Differences.' According to that system, great compassion is what is possessed in the mind-stream of the Buddhas. Loving-kindness is what is possessed in the mind-streams of Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and so on. Furthermore, loving-kindness is focused on sentient beings who have suffering. By familiarizing oneself with this in many lifetimes, great compassion arises, which is focused on all beings who possess all three kinds of suffering. As it says in the 'Pramanavarttika': The cause of accomplishment is from familiarizing oneself with compassion. That is the intention. Compassion is the antidote to harm, directly benefiting others, and is a distinction of loving-kindness that desires to benefit. What is the difference between loving-kindness for sentient beings, for the Dharma, and without a focal point? These need to be understood through the four differences of object, the individual who is the basis, cause, and function. The difference in object is that suffering sentient beings who are substantially existent, sentient beings who are nominally existent, and sentient beings who are like illusions are, in order, the objects of these three. The difference in basis is that ordinary beings and Shravaka-Pratyekabuddha noble ones
