Please descend, everyone! They all cried out in one voice, weeping. The king, red-faced, felt ashamed and hesitated, wondering what to do. So he asked the Arhat Namchen. The Arhat said, "Write the king's decree on a copper plate and throw it into the great ocean." When they did so, the dragon did not take it; instead, the waves cast it far away. Then the Arhat Namchen (ཅ༤༦ན) said, "Make a statue of the king out of gold from the Zambu River, and another statue of the dragon, the same size. Throw them together into the bathing pond." At that time, the dragon's statue shone brightly, not sinking into the water, but floating on the surface, clear and bright. The king's statue, however, was dim and sank into the water, bowing in obeisance. The Arhat said, "Now, O King, you have more merit than the Dragon King. Great King, do good deeds!" Then he invited hundreds of thousands of Arhats, made extensive offerings, and worshipped them with great ceremony. He built many representations of the Buddha's body, speech, and mind. During the flawless offerings and donations, he did not stop, but continued without interruption. After seven days, half of the king's statue had not sunk and appeared on the surface of the water. After fourteen days, the two statues were the same height and quality, standing side by side on the water. After twenty-one days, the king's statue was bright and radiant, floating on the surface of the water. The dragon's statue, however, was like iron, its light not shining, bowing in obeisance and sinking into the water. The Arhat said, "Send a letter." The decree written on the copper plate was thrown into the ocean, where a mass of foam floated on the surface, making a great noise, and sank into the middle of the ocean. Dragons, yakshas, rakshasas, decaying bodies, and many other non-human beings brought all the goods of the merchants and the immeasurable treasures of the dragons to the king, so that everyone could see. They respectfully offered gifts and made extensive offerings and praises. The Dragon King, who had attained irreversible patience and received the prophecy of enlightenment, had his merit overwhelmed by the human king, Ashoka (ཅ༤༦བ), and he became even more confident in the power of merit.

E! To the Sangha, offering a hundred billion gold coins, thus firmly holding the vow. This is called the chapter of King Ashoka subduing the Nagas, and it is also the third branch of the Wish-Fulfilling Vine. That king's daily practice was: inviting countless monks to the palace every day, making grand offerings, wearing a hat, and listening to the Dharma. He always made offerings to the Buddha's teachings in this way. After offering ninety-six billion gold coins, when four billion were still lacking, the king was afflicted with a severe seasonal illness. The king's nephew, acting as regent, knowing the king's intention, was stingy with the treasury and did not offer the gold. The Sangha, out of compassion for the king, came every day even without being invited. That regent, without wearing a hat, taught the Dharma and then, with an empty bowl, went out of the palace to beg for alms. The king saved from his own medicine, food, clothing, and ornaments, offering as much as he could. But those were guarded by the prince, and on the last day, there was nothing else to offer. Only the amla powder for bathing, all that was possessed, was offered. At that time, one of the king's great ministers felt sad and said: Great King! You have no other possessions, but you possess land, please offer this land! Let it be redeemed with four billion gold coins, and your wish will be fulfilled. Hearing this, the great king was very pleased and offered all the land to the Sangha. That regent redeemed it with four billion. Thereafter, the king, possessing the Dharma of the time, was reborn in the Tushita heaven. Ultimately, he was prophesied to attain perfect enlightenment. Furthermore, in the great root tantra of Manjushri, the prophecy of the king is briefly stated: After Ashoka, there will appear one free from sorrow, wearing white clothes, having the state of practice of an accomplished one, offering stupas at the age of seventy-six. After that, there will appear a host of heroes, the great glorious accomplished one will build a great temple, decorating it with many stupas at the end of the sea, for seven years.
