I, the great lord Padmakara, said: One hundred years after my complete Nirvana, in the city called Syanar, a king named Ashoka will be born, a descendant of the Maurya clan, and he will become a righteous Dharma king. He will build eighty-four thousand stupas of my relics in one day. There are many other sutras that say he will appear one hundred years later. The Root Tantra of Manjushri says: I will pass into Nirvana on the earth, when one hundred years have passed, light will be gone and full of faults, and the darkness of ignorance will completely obscure. At that time, the earth will be empty, abandoned by the Victors. At that time, it will be the time of great good people, in the city of flowers, a king named Ashoka will rule the earth. And so on. Thus, he possesses great miraculous power, and at that time, a Chakravartin of power will arise. It also says: This entire Jambudvipa will be adorned with stupas. Although the number of stupas is not mentioned, the lifespan is one hundred and fifty years. It also says: For eighty-seven years, stupas will be offered on the earth. It is said that he was the patron of the Second Buddhist Council, but it was not said before his one hundred and tenth year. Therefore, King Ashoka, before the age of sixty-three, acted wickedly and was called the tyrant King Ashoka. From the age of sixty-three, after being taken in by a virtuous friend, he became known as the Dharma King Ashoka. The Buddha prophesied the Maurya clan. In the past, when the Buddha went to the city, two children were playing as king and minister, building palaces and treasuries out of sand. When they saw the Buddha coming, they developed faith and offered the sandpile as a treasury. One of the children scooped up a handful of sand with both hands and prepared to pour it into the Buddha's bowl, but could not reach it. The other child bent down and let him step on his back to make the offering. The Buddha observed their devout minds and lowered the height of the bowl in his hand to receive the offering. The mother scolded the king, saying, "How can you offer such a thing?" The Buddha stopped her and told Ananda: Because they offered with good intentions,

Ri ah. Mixing earth offerings with arising incense, the Teacher said, 'Offer me a clean room with fragrance.' A hundred years after my passing, this superior of the children will become the king of Jambudvipa, named Ashoka. The stupas containing my relics, equal to the number of grains of sand scattered here, will spread throughout Jambudvipa. The other child will become his minister, and will pacify Jambudvipa,' thus spoke the Teacher. The place where the sand was scattered before, in Nalanda, there is a stupa there. Thirty-seven years after the Teacher's passing, a king had seventeen princes, and one son born to a servant girl, making eighteen in total. The father gathered all the princes, and when divining who possessed the name of a king, the seventeen princes boasted with fine food, clothing, and ornaments, each seated on a throne. Because they thought they would never obtain the kingdom, the servant girl's son did not go, but stayed there. The minister said, 'Go anyway.' He wore old clothes, ate food filled with rice, and sat on the ground. The Brahmin prophesied, 'Among these, the one who eats the best food, wears the best clothes, and sits on the best seat, will become the king.' They each left saying, 'Mine is the best.' The minister asked, 'What is the best?' He said, 'The best food is rice, the best clothes are rags, and the best seat is the ground.' Thus, the prophecy was made about the lowly servant girl's son. When the king was near death from illness, all the other princes had gone to battle in the war. The minister urged the lowly Ashoka, placed a crown on him, and said, 'Do this for now, then appoint an elder brother.' The seventeen elder brothers all died on the battlefield, and Ashoka himself became the permanent king. The cutting off of hell, the hunger and thirst of pretas, the servitude of animals, the toil and poverty of humans, the strife of asuras, the enjoyment of gods, treating everyone with expectation, thus he arranged the people. His name was also known as Cruel Ashoka. At that time, in the eastern crow settlement, a disciple of the venerable Ananda, named Bhikshu Independent Army or Fame, an Arhat possessing eight liberations, resided there. His disciple, the young novice
