How can each and every detail be described? Strong castles, those dwelling within castles, and those clad in fine armor, etc., are signs of protection. Crows, black people, black yaks, etc., whose color and hair, etc., have deteriorated and lie prostrate on the ground, who attack back and are displeasing, and black women without adornment weeping and fighting, and the smoke of black dogs, etc., dreaming of these (387) are signs that the Protector is displeased and that the Dharma protectors are turning against oneself, so one should keep vows strictly. Pray, regarding the Lama and the Protector as inseparable, and exert oneself in protective torma offerings and confessions until the signs change. Furthermore, dreaming of broken weapons, silent musical instruments, lepers, and being stained by impurities, etc., are signs of decline, so one should strive in the instructions for dispelling decline, or in the recitation of the Hundred Syllable Mantra, or in recitations and confessions, etc. As for the recitation of numbers, it is said that (388) one "kha" is ten times one hundred thousand life-force mantras, or ten times one hundred thousand. The All-Knowing Lord Tsongkhapa said that reciting one hundred million root mantras at this time is the best of numerical recitations, but merely reciting ten times one hundred thousand, etc., is unlikely to produce any effect for most people. Thus it was said. Therefore, it is reasonable to recite about one hundred million essence mantras. As for the recitation of time, the former Lamas said six months. Among these, the recitation of signs is the best, the recitation of numbers is the intermediate, and the recitation of time is the lowest. In the tantras and the great treatises that possess the standard, (389) the purity of the recitation of time is spoken of, and there is not much difference for any deity. Secondly, the accomplishment and the three actions, and thirdly, the application to actions, these two are: according to the different classifications of applying to the actions of pacification, increase, subjugation, and wrath, there are many different ways of how the accomplishment should be done. Even so, before applying to actions such as killing, the accomplishment of going and the application of that to actions are not explained because what should be prevented is great and what is needed is small. Only the torma accomplishment that is needed immediately is explained, and even though there are many applications to actions, only one aspect (390) of applying the great torma to actions for the sake of averting obstacles, etc., will be spoken of. Now, the Protector

All three activities of pacifying, increasing, subjugating, and destroying depend on the Torma. Vows are fulfilled with Tormas, and all activities must be carried out after offering Tormas. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the essence of Tormas for Dharma protectors. Next, I will briefly discuss the classification of Tormas here: Offering and collecting Tormas in one's own practice room, protector's shrine, etc., at those times is called "Relying Torma," which has the same meaning as what is now called "Holding Torma." Making new ones every evening, blessing them, and offering them is called "Continuous Torma." The Torma that is always placed is called "Permanent Torma." Placing it for a year or a month, etc., such as on the twenty-ninth day of the end of the year or month, or at the time of one's own position change, etc., is called "Temporary Torma." On the eighth, eleventh, or fifteenth of the waxing moon, or the twenty-ninth of the waning moon, etc., arranging very beautiful new Tormas and offering them extensively, and then sending them away that very night, is called "Time Torma." Also, for Vaishravana (Tibetan: rNam sras), the eighth and fifteenth of the waxing moon must be fixed, and for the four-faced protector, the eighth and eleventh of the waxing moon, and the twenty-ninth of the waning moon are considered very important. However, for this Mahakala and Gur Mahakala, etc., the twenty-ninth of the waning moon is particularly important. However, if the main purpose is to increase enjoyment, etc., then Time Torma can also be performed on the waxing moon. Due to harm from illness, enemies, etc., at the time when harm occurs, arranging and offering new Tormas, and sending them away at that time, is called "Sudden Entrustment Torma." Arranging very beautiful Tormas, nourishing them six times a day, blessing them six times a day, and not offering or dedicating them even once until a stable sign of accomplishing the activity appears, but leaving them there, and offering temporary Tormas six times a day, saying, "Please accomplish this and that activity! When that and that activity is accomplished, this great Torma will also be offered!" Thus, holding the Torma as collateral or empty, which is called "Collateral Torma," when a stable sign of accomplishing the activity appears, that great Torma is offered as a reward. For both Mahakala and Mahakali, at the end of each session, new Tormas are arranged and offered.
