Having looked, that empty nature, free from all conceptions of shape, color, etc., is unborn. However, that emptiness is not like clinging to an empty sky, or putting a hand into an empty gourd, but is clear and bright without the cessation of characteristics, existing plainly. If you think it is different, it is not, clarity is emptiness, emptiness (287) is clarity, that plain essence is indivisible, it is union. For that which cannot be conceived as "this is it" in one direction, and which is beyond the realm of thought, there are names such as the original mind, ordinary consciousness, the essence of the Thus-Gone One, the lineage of inherent nature, the realm of phenomena, the nature of all phenomena, the intention of the Buddha, the inherent state of mind, and so on. This is not done by a lama giving great instructions, or by a student having great wisdom, but it exists that way from the beginning. That which is co-emergent, that which is not recognized, is co-emergent ignorance. That which recognizes its own face nakedly is co-emergent wisdom, self-arisen wisdom, non-conceptual wisdom, recognizing the nature of mind, arising meditation, and so on. In short (288), it is the self-arising of the Dharmakaya with two purities. Now, if one's own mind abides as the Dharmakaya from the beginning, what is the reason for wandering in samsara? The wisdom dakini said: Although one's own mind is inseparable from the Dharmakaya, it is not recognized because it is too close. Although it arises in oneself, it is not recognized because it is too profound. It is enough to remember, but it is not believed because it is too easy. Although the three kayas arise in oneself, they are not contained in the mind because they are too good. One wanders in samsara because of these four faults. The way to be liberated from these four faults is: First, one's own mind and the Dharmakaya have no good or bad in essence, no before or after in time, and no high or low in abiding. Although it is not recognized like the eyes, relying on the blessing of the lama, one recognizes oneself, and one recognizes when one recognizes one's own nature in the absence of an object. That Dharmakaya is not established in any one direction, such as shape and color, and cannot be expressed (289) by words and letters, etc. It cannot be represented by any example, and cannot be understood by a mind with partiality. Therefore, it is not recognized because it is too profound. The reason for not recognizing is that it is covered by the obscuration of conceptual ignorance. To this, the lama's instructions naturally

When relying on the three and separating from them, the nature of awareness and wisdom naturally arises as the dharma. When it arises, recognize it. Then, is it enough to recognize and realize it once? No, you need to have faith in it. The sutras, tantras, and pith instructions say that this is the Dharmakaya, so have faith. Like this, the Dharmakaya of your own mind, which you have recognized and have faith in, do not seek another Buddha elsewhere, keep it in mind. In this way, the four faults are naturally liberated. In short, the luminosity and emptiness of your own mind, which is without a place, is what the lama points out. If you recognize your own face, that is recognition. (290) Like this, the decisive certainty that arises in the luminosity and emptiness without a place, which is clear and distinct without a place, that is the view, the wisdom that realizes the nature of reality. Without losing that state, just remembering, just not being distracted, there is nothing else to meditate on, that is meditation. All activities are inseparable from that state, that is action. That which manifests is the temporary result. Having gained stability in that, all the dharmas of samsara and nirvana become one with it, free from acceptance and rejection, that is the spontaneous arising of the three kayas, that is the ultimate result. The measure of the main practice is that appearance and emptiness are inseparable, naturally arising without mental fabrication. The measure of stability is that day and night are equal, without before or after. Again, rest in the natural state, like a Brahmin spinning thread. If you are too tight, your mind is tense, and you want to meditate with an antidote, the antidote of Mahamudra is cut off from the root, so it won't work. If you are loose, and distraction becomes your own continuum, (291) the distraction of Mahamudra is abandoned from the ground, so it won't work, so rest in the uncorrected natural state. Resting like this, awareness is clear and without grasping, like the clear autumn sky. Looking at the sky, nothing like color is established anywhere. If you say it is not there, it exists clearly and purely. Similarly, looking at the mind, if you say it is there, nothing like color is established anywhere. If you say it is not there, it abides in the nature of clarity and purity. Like this, being liberated from existence and non-existence is inconceivable, or too profound to be expressed in words. Moreover, the appearances of the mind have no direction, therefore, the nature that is separate from that also has no direction. Therefore, Mahamudra is the one without direction, but the tirthikas, like showing a lamp to a blind man, (292) perversely cling to permanence and annihilation. Inner
