It is easy to be separated from life and die, but it is not so with the deterioration and destruction of discipline. Why is that? Separating from life and dying only ends the life of this lifetime, but the deterioration and destruction of discipline will cause one to be separated from wisdom and abandon happiness for hundreds of thousands of lifetimes, experiencing great falls. Therefore, the Teacher explained the supreme mantra of discipline. (863) Those who possess discipline will meet the Buddha. Those who possess discipline are the most supreme of all ornaments. Those who possess discipline are fragrant ointments. Those who possess discipline are the abode of all joys. Those who possess discipline are the water that dispels suffering. Those who possess discipline are praised by all the world. With pure discipline, one attains noble states. Just as fierce poisonous snakes and great black dragons, cannot harm those who possess discipline, what need be said of others? Monks who possess discipline are radiant with light. Those who possess discipline gain fame and attain happiness. Just as the blind cannot see forms, so too, without discipline (864) one cannot see the Dharma. Just as the footless cannot walk the path, so too, without discipline one cannot be liberated. Just as a good vase is a container for jewels, so too, discipline is the foundation for generating all Dharmas. Just as a broken vase cannot be used as a container for jewels, so too, broken discipline destroys all Dharmas. Those who initially lack discipline, do they think they will attain Nirvana later? For those who are noseless, with mutilated ears, and so on, a mirror will not change their appearance. Even if the ear has not heard and the eye has not seen, those who protect the teachings will ascend to the heavens. The learned, the knowledgeable, and those who protect what they have learned will surely ascend to the heavens. How can one associate with women? (865) How can one delight in the king's palace? How can there be lasting enjoyment? For women, nothing is permissible. For royal power, there is nothing to be delighted in. For bubbles, there is no essence. Enjoyment is like a flowing river. What is a boat like, so is a home. What is a flower like, so is appearance. Life is like a water bubble. The Blessed One spoke thus, and the monks, including the attendant Ananda, rejoiced and praised the Blessed One's teachings. After speaking, from whatever merit is accomplished from explaining the Dharma, with this

May all beings attain the wisdom of the Sugata (866). Then, the method for a novice to perform the Uposatha is as follows: Bow down to any bhikkhu and sit in a squatting position. Inform the abbot or the virtuous one, or the venerable Sangha, please listen. I, the Shākya novice named so-and-so, due to being young and ignorant, disrespectful, without shame, and with many afflictions, whatever misdeeds I have committed, from the point of complete purification onwards, before the abbot or the virtuous one, the venerable Sangha, I confess and repent. Having confessed and repented, I will dwell in happiness, but if I do not confess and repent, it will not be so. (867) Three times. The bhikkhu asks: Have you seen the faults of the novice? The novice answers: I have seen them. Three times. Will you guard them well from now on? Answer: I will guard them well. Three times. This is the method. Good! Good! Then, during the main practice, bow down again and make a mudra. Inform as before, today is the fourteenth or fifteenth Uposatha of the Sangha. I, the novice named so-and-so, perform the Uposatha as before. I, the novice named so-and-so, am completely purified of the obstructing dharmas. If I am present, please remember, Abbot, etc., that I am completely purified of the obstructing dharmas. Three times. (868) The method should be done well, separated from the vicinity of hearing. Then, if the bhikkhu's downfall is not completely confessed, it should be done here. If, because the downfalls are the same, a place for confession cannot be found, then a common blessing should be done. First, in order to prevent common downfalls that cannot be confessed due to the power of place and time from obstructing the work, request the Sangha to bless with the work of supplication, and ask the Sangha to follow the conduct and focus on the work of supplication. Venerable Sangha, please listen. Today is the fourteenth or fifteenth Uposatha of the Sangha. If all of us, the Sangha, have fallen into downfalls, before whom (869) shall we perform those downfalls again according to the Dharma? If there are bhikkhus among us living in other places, and if no one is willing to perform those downfalls again according to the Dharma before the bhikkhus, if
