La, cultivate in that state. This is the fourth empowerment. After that, strongly cultivate the intention of dreaming. Again, repeat that, meditate without counting sessions or time limits, you must practice like that. In the instructions of both Jag and Sam (page 418), it says that if the outer vessel and essence are not clearly absorbed into oneself, and the object of daytime is not clearly absorbed into luminosity, then the practice is slightly hidden. However, Khedrup Shyönnu Drub considers that, like the object of grasping luminosity, it should also be gradually expanded. The reason for calling those two holding onto non-conceptuality is that, when actually applying it, from the absorption of the object to falling asleep, it is not interrupted by other conceptual thoughts, and it is necessary to abide in a state of non-thought. This is the twenty-first object guidance. The second is taking the path with conceptualization: the preliminary practice is the same as before, in the four petals of the root of one's own throat, visualize it as a four-petaled red lotus, in the center of that lotus, there is a red Om (Tibetan: ཨོཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ओ, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Om), the red light of that red Om pervades all directions of the throat. Practice vase breathing or gentle breathing, before midnight I must catch the dream tonight (page 419). Recognize that the dream is a dream. In this way, send out a strong intention. After midnight, I think I have fallen asleep. This appearance seems to be a dream, strongly intend in this way. In the evening session, now the dream will come quickly, so you must recognize it here, generate intention in this way. That is to say, the coarse appearance of the present waking state, in the stage before falling into deep sleep, is called the conceptual thought between sleep and appearance. After the feeling of a buzzing sound in the ears, or the feeling of numbness in the body, or drowsiness, or tingling between the eyebrows, or difficulty in breathing, etc., the beings such as people and dogs, and the images of houses and roads, etc., appear vaguely. Slightly less clear than the clear dream of descending, a faint appearance occurs, that is called the conceptual thought between sleep and appearance. (page 420) At this time, strongly cultivate the intention that you must recognize that it is a dream. In those three stages, the object is the same except for changing the intention. At the three time points, hold with the three key points of the body.

The method is also the same as before, but instead of gathering the object of focus into emptiness and abiding there, one focuses the mind on the syllable OM. Now, when the conceptual thoughts between sleep and appearance arise, one should recognize this, and with an intention that is not too strong, indicating that it is now necessary to recognize it, one should go to sleep. There, if conceptual thoughts arise between sleep and appearance, one should generate a slight intention that "this is a dream," and slightly contract the lower abdomen. However, if there is too much artificiality, one will wake up, so one should go to sleep while maintaining a slight intention. Recognizing the conceptual thoughts between sleep and appearance, and because it is held with a conceptual intention, it is called the conceptual path application (421). It is said that this is a secret instruction that makes it impossible not to grasp the dream. Here, in the instruction manuals of Ja, Sam, and Serlingpa, they only briefly mentioned the OM syllable in the throat and then stopped. Regarding the daytime object of focus, they emphasized the practice of both non-conceptual and conceptual, in the manner of the previous object of focus. Jachen said that, or, in order to enhance the effectiveness of the two objects of focus, instead of practicing those two themselves, one should train the general intention of dreams, all of which are based on reliance on oral instructions. This is the guidance on the twenty-second object of focus. Second is the practice of dreaming: After gaining stability in grasping dreams, it is necessary to practice dreaming. That is to say, abandoning the object of focus of grasping dreams, one is completely focused on practice. If one is consistently practicing the object of focus of grasping, then one will grasp dreams every night (422), and from that point on, one should also practice the object of focus of practice, and it is sufficient to combine grasping and practice into one. There are four of these: training the mind with the body, training the body with the mind, training with the mother of selflessness, and training with intention. The first of these is: other than being the same as when grasping dreams, such as in guru yoga, one changes the recitation of "Please bless me to master dreams." Then the actual object of focus is: visualize that below where you are, there is a very large abyss like a cliff. Visualize that you are also in the sky above the edge of that abyss, about an arrow's length away. Then, looking down, you will feel dizzy. At that moment, I think I fell asleep. This appearance is a dream.
