arising, that wisdom will dissolve all the subtle and gross aspects of the eighty types of conceptual thoughts into the clear light. This is also called the clear light of self-nature, also called the palace of the clear light of death, the dharmakaya, and also called the first bardo, the clear light of self-arising. Those who have previously familiarized themselves with the clear light, the sharp-witted ones, when that clear light of self-nature and the clear light of subsequent meditation meet like mother and child, they will recognize that clear light itself. By abiding single-pointedly in that state, they will not need to enter the bardo of existence, but will attain buddhahood in the dharmakaya. Without moving from that unborn dharmakaya, the two form bodies will spontaneously and effortlessly arise (832), and until samsara is empty, they will guide sentient beings to maturity and liberation according to their needs. In the Tantra of the Play of Wisdom it says: "For the person who has realized the clear light, that city of the bardo is not seen. The appearance of the form body for the benefit of others arises, like a wish-fulfilling jewel." So it is said. This is mainly in terms of those who proceed gradually. For those who are sudden, there is no such certainty of sequence. The way the elements of an ordinary person's death dissolve, and the way the experiences of a yogi's meditation arise, are similar, so there is no certainty that smoke and mirages will arise first. In short, the words of the Victorious Ones in the sutras and tantras, the words of a qualified lama and meditator, and one's own meditative experience must be in accord. If understanding and experience go separately, it will cause trouble (833), and it will be difficult to accomplish great things, so it is permissible to claim to be a practitioner, but it must be profound. Second, the intermediate one attains the sambhogakaya, self-arising: For those of intermediate faculties, who are unable to abide in the clear light of the first bardo, it is necessary to enter the bardo of existence, and therefore one must strive during the first week to attain the sambhogakaya. During the first week, up to three and a half days, appearances of the previous life's body, place, home, possessions, relatives, etc. arise, so it is difficult to have awareness in the bardo at that time. After three and a half days have passed, appearances of the future body arise momentarily, but the appearances of the previous body cannot be sustained, and afflicted by the suffering of hunger and thirst, they go to the relatives of the previous life seeking food.
