Appearances of such things arise. Sometimes appearances of caves and huts arise. Friends are uncertain, sometimes associating with pleasing beings such as gods and goddesses (826). Sometimes appearances of associating with displeasing beings such as demons and ogres arise. Food is uncertain, sometimes appearances of being satisfied by the taste of nectar, and sometimes by impure things. Clothing is uncertain, sometimes appearances of wearing coarse cloth, and sometimes silk. Appearances are uncertain, now being in one's own place, but immediately appearing to arrive in another place as if being killed. Refuge is uncertain, sometimes appearances of going for refuge to bridges, resting places, trees, and so on. Therefore, the lama said that these are the six signs of uncertainty in the bardo, so there is no other hope, and so on, meditate as before. Furthermore, I think I have died and arrived in the bardo. When talking to former acquaintances and relatives, I used to hear replies, but now I cannot hear replies. I can only smell the food (827). I can go to mountains and other places without obstruction, and arrive at the place I want to go in an instant, and so on. In short, in all four activities of eating, talking, and dressing, I say, "Ah, I have arrived in the bardo," and so on. There is no other hope, may the lama and the Three Jewels have mercy, pray in this way, and then in this state, the best is to put the view first, the intermediate is to practice the illusory body, and the lowest is to make pure aspirations. Secondly, the way to attain enlightenment by practicing from the arising of clear light until the bardo is: the best is the natural arising of the first clear light of the bardo, the intermediate is the natural arising of the victorious enjoyment body, and the lowest is the natural arising of the unobstructed emanation body. The general key point is to apply it to the path without confusion. The first case is according to the process of gradual death. First, the way the five sense objects dissolve is: form dissolves into sound, (828) so the eyes see things slightly less clearly. Sound dissolves into smell, so the ears do not hear sounds. Smell dissolves into taste, so the nose does not smell. Taste dissolves into touch, so the tongue does not taste. The objects of touch dissolve into wind, so the body does not feel touch as before, and the complexion of the body worsens. The way the elements dissolve is: first, earth dissolves into water, so the body's strength weakens, and saliva and nasal mucus flow out. Water dissolves into fire, so the tongue and mouth and nose become dry.

All the weakening parts of the body dry up. The fire element dissolves into the wind element, causing the body's warmth to completely gather. The wind dissolves into consciousness, ceasing the flow of inner and outer breath. Consciousness dissolves into clear light. In the first instant, the white bodhicitta, the nature of water, resides at the crown of the head in the form of the syllable HUNG (藏文:ཧྃ།,梵文天城体:हं,梵文罗马拟音:haṃ,汉语字面意思:Hum), and then descends. The outer sign is a white light appearing like the rising moon. (829) The inner sign is a hazy, indistinct appearance like smoke. Like an illusion, it flickers, emitting a radiance with five colors. At that time, the non-conceptual wisdom called "Appearance" arises for the first instant. Through its power, the thirty-three conceptualizations arising from hatred cease. At that time, even towards enemies or flesh-eaters, hatred does not arise. After that, the red bodhicitta, the nature of fire, resides at the navel in the form of Tummo A-thung (藏文:ཨ་ཐུང་,梵文天城体:अ थुं,梵文罗马拟音:a thuṃ,汉语字面意思:A Thung), and then blazes upwards. The outer sign is like the rising sun. The inner sign is a flickering red light like a firefly. At that time, the wisdom of conceptualization called "Increase," clearer than before and without grasping, naturally abides, and the second instant arises. Through its power, the forty conceptualizations arising from desire cease. At (830) that time, even towards gods and goddesses, desire does not arise. The white and red bodhicitta, between their first meeting at the heart, the wind and mind gather. The outer sign is like dusk, becoming dark and thick. The inner sign is a clear, non-conceptual stillness, like a butter lamp unmoved by the wind. At that time, the non-conceptual wisdom called "Attainment," clear and free from all grasping, naturally abides, and the third instant arises. Through its power, the seven conceptualizations arising from ignorance cease. At the heart, the wind and mind gathered between the white and red bodhicitta enter the central channel. The outer sign is a greyish light appearing like the dawn breaking. The inner sign is like the autumn sky illuminated by the sun, and the experience of bliss and emptiness arises. (831) At that time, the clear light of inherent nature called "Near Attainment," free from all defilements of clinging and conceptualization, the wisdom of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality, the fourth instant
