When clarity and luminosity arise in awareness, and when the experience of empty, spacious non-thought arises, let go without attachment. If the experience is too intense, so that it seems impossible to break, do not meditate on it, but leave it as it is on the appearance. When bliss, clarity, and emptiness dissolve, the true nature will appear nakedly. If you develop a true attachment to the appearances, clarity, and ways of arising of the mind, and if gross attachment and aversion arise, then trust that everything is like a mirage and rest in the state of searching but not finding. (681) In this way, it will appear as emptiness. Because there is no difference in the nature of your own mind, if you develop the wrong view that there is no need to accept or reject cause and effect, then even if cause and effect are not real, conventional cause and effect are not deceptive. Even if fire is not real, wood will burn. Even if water is not real, moisture will not cease, so you must develop faith in cause and effect. Practice in this way. Thus, if the mind abides in a state of clarity and emptiness without grasping, that is calm abiding, and it is necessary to eliminate both sinking and excitement. If all appearances are mind, and all dwelling and movement are experienced without grasping, then insight has arisen. (682) When you can recognize the nature of whatever arises and can maintain it without fabrication, then the realization of the actual practice of Mahamudra has arisen. What is thought in the mind? What appears in the appearances? When everything does not need to rely on mindfulness and effort, and everything becomes the vast expanse of clarity and emptiness of recognizing one's own nature, that is called "root severance," which is the ultimate of subsequent experience. This was a close instruction given by Taranatha for the sake of the virtuous friend Jñānarabhadra in the eastern region of Kongpo. May it be virtuous! (683) The instructions on the Nigu branch Mahamudra Gau box. (684) Namo Guru (藏文:ན་མོ་གུ་རུ།,梵文天城体:नमो गुरु,梵文罗马拟音:Namo Guru,汉语字面意思:敬礼 गुरु上师). Great bliss, spontaneously accomplished, uncreated, the Sambhogakaya Vajradhara, and so forth. Having paid homage to all the lamas, here I will explain the Great Seal. Among these, the instructions of the wisdom dakini Niguma, the Mahamudra Gau, have three parts: preliminaries, main practice, and subsequent practice. The first part has two: common and (685) uncommon. The first, common preliminary practice is: In the space in front of oneself, on a jeweled throne, lotus, and moon, the essence is the root lama, the form is Chakrasamvara, the body is white, with one face and two hands, holding a vajra and bell crossed at the heart.

Adorned with bones and jewels, contemplate the appearance as devoid of inherent existence. (686) In front of it, practice refuge and the four immeasurables. Generate the supreme Bodhicitta and offer the mandala. Recite the Vajrasattva mantra. Pray to the lineage of gurus. Extensively contemplate the faults of death, impermanence, karma, and cyclic existence. Knowing all sentient beings as mothers, remembering their kindness, and so forth, cultivate loving-kindness and compassion as if towards an enemy, until it arises; this is the common practice. Second, the uncommon preliminary practice: place it upon the three natural states. That is, one's own body is clearly visualized as the deity, with legs in the vajra posture. The two hands form the mudra of equipoise. The spine is straightened. The neck is slightly bent. The eyes gaze straight ahead. The tip of the tongue touches the palate. The lips are naturally placed. The elbows are drawn inward, so that the essential points of the body are well-arranged, as if warmed by the heat of meditation. (687) Then, relax the four limbs and the four calves; this is the natural state of the body. Without the effort of opening the lips and smiling, and without speech or expression, this is the natural state of speech. With the gaze of the eyes and so forth, without the thought of "I shall meditate on this," without fabrication, abide; this is the natural state of mind. In this state, abide in astonishment and cessation; this is the measure of the preliminary practice. Such a state is called ordinary consciousness. In the state of cessation and rest, it arises momentarily in all sentient beings, but because they do not recognize its face, they wander in cyclic existence. Therefore, in all four activities, in the realm of the six senses, whatever appears of the six external objects, hold it with mindfulness. Gazing intently at its essence, it dissolves into clarity, emptiness, and non-grasping. The thought arises, "My preliminary practice has arisen," (688) and in this, abide in astonishment and cessation. At that time, if the mind wanders due to not having practiced before, then refine it with this: what is grasped in the external appearance of the object? What is grasped in the internal body? What is grasped in the secret mind? Examine with wisdom. Having examined, if no grasping is found, then abide in that state. Again, if the mind wanders to an appearance, then from where did the appearance of the object to which it wanders first arise? Where does it now abide? Where does it ultimately cease? Do not place it in generality, but search well. Then it dissolves into non-grasping.
