If the mind is distracted by joy, one should generate aversion to impermanence and suffering, this is the fourth point of focus. The second is to learn the indeterminate way of looking, to learn various Dharma practices, and to combine them with various behaviors. The first is: the way of looking with the eyes, high and near like a rooftop, far away like a mountain peak or the expanse of the sky, remain equally, this is the fifth point of focus. Low and near like the side of a wall, far away like the side of a mountain, remain equally, this is the sixth point of focus. Straight ahead, near like a wall, far away like a mountain range, remain equally, this is the seventh point of focus. The second is: reciting sutras, reciting mantras, the meaning of combining with various (661) stories is to first combine with sutras and other recitations that are familiar, gradually combine with all recitations, do as much as possible, this is the eighth point of focus. First combine with short mantras, then combine with all recitations, this is the ninth point of focus. First combine with sounds such as the sound of water, then combine with the noise of crowds and the sound of closing doors, then combine with the sound of others speaking, be amazed by these clear sounds, remain focused, this is the tenth point of focus. The third is to learn various behaviors: even when eating, eat in a natural state; when walking, practice in the same way; when speaking, do not deviate from the natural state. (662) First practice on unimportant matters without forcing yourself, and eventually you will become proficient in all matters. Similarly, for objects that give rise to high and low thoughts such as pleasure and pain, like and dislike, fear, shyness, shame, disgust, etc., practice by combining them with the natural state. All of these will be integrated into the state of virtuous conduct as before, this is the eleventh point of focus. Thus, there are eleven points of focus for calm abiding. The second is the guidance of insight, searching for the mind: if explained in detail according to the oral transmission of the guru, first, as before, take the three natural states as the key points, and search in a relaxed state, this is the preliminary for all methods. The main practice has seven points of focus: searching for the nature of the mind (663), searching for arising and ceasing, searching for object appearance, searching for thoughts, searching for the difference between the existence and non-existence of object appearance, searching for the difference between the existence and non-existence of thoughts, determining in the nature of reality. The first is: the mind's

To look at its essence greatly and examine it in detail is to enter. There, when effort naturally disappears and an experience arises that cannot be expressed, then naturally abide, this is the first point of focus. The second is: Looking at that non-conceptual mind itself, is it a constant and stable one that never arises or ceases? Or is it something that arises and ceases, an utter nothingness? If it arises and ceases, how does it arise? If it abides, how does it abide? (664) What are its color, shape, etc.? Where is it, inside or outside? If it ceases, how does it cease? When these and other things are examined in detail, it subsides into non-grasping. This is the second point of focus. The third is: When the eye sees a form, look at what the essence of that clear seeing of the form is like. Are that and the mind, this clear and radiant one, the same or different? Examine in detail what the difference is. Likewise, apply this to hearing sounds with the ear, etc. This is the third point of focus. The fourth is: Again, what is the difference between this arising of thoughts as a path and the nature of the mind? Examine whether these two are the same or not. When a thought arises, how does it arise? When it has arisen and has not ceased, what is the way of (665) existing? When it ceases, what is the way of ceasing? Examine in detail, this is the fourth point of focus. The fifth is: What is the difference between the mind when the eye sees a form and the mind when it does not see a form? If there is, what is the way of existing? If there is not, what is the way of not existing? Examine, this is the fifth point of focus. The sixth is: Examine well whether there is a difference between good and bad, clear and unclear, empty and not empty in the mind when a thought arises and the mind when it does not arise. These four methods of searching will eventually lead to the state where the target disappears, so maintain that state. This is the ninth point of focus. The seventh is: Determine that all these appearances (666) are your own mind. When the mind is examined well, there is no grasping at all, and abide in that state. Searching further, although there is no grasping, it is not an utter nothingness, but while being empty, the clear emptiness that appears in various ways, naked, vivid and flashing, clearly experienced, inexpressible, completely settle into that, this is the seventh point of focus. Thus, there are seven for vipassanā. There are eighteen points of focus for the three types of preliminary, natural, and various. The guru of Kyungpo is Niguma.
