Furthermore, it is most important to relinquish attachment to the body. Shantideva said, "To which body am I attached? Fear arises in the face of small terrors. Who would not hate this body that gives rise to fear as if it were an enemy?" Thus he spoke. From beginningless time, no matter what efforts have been made for the sake of this body, the nature of the body itself is inanimate. It neither rejoices nor grieves at benefits or harms done to it. The mind is empty of inherent existence. The conventional appearances that arise now are born from causes and conditions, and therefore have no essence. Cause and effect cease in an instant, and even after arising, they cannot be established. Therefore, thinking that one has previously engaged in meaningless conflict, now regard oneself as an enemy, repel all the eight classes of gods and demons and the eighty thousand types of obstructing spirits, and pray, "Please be my friend, please destroy this self-grasping, please make these five aggregates of mine into emptiness without inherent existence." Practice in this way. Through doing so, please do your best to subdue the demon of self-grasping in this short life. Sharawa said, "As long as you do not see yourself as an enemy, no one, not even the lama, can protect you. If you see yourself as an enemy, they will come to help you." Thus, if you regard yourself as an enemy, even if harm comes from non-humans and spirits, it is harming the enemy. This becomes a friend in the battle against self-grasping. Because there is a large army on my side, it is not appropriate to generate hatred towards the harmer, but rather to be pleased. He said that at that time, a special method of liberation from adverse circumstances will arise. At that time, you will reach your goal. In this way, now divide yourself and others into enemies and friends and practice. Alternately divide yourself into enemies and friends and practice. Label thoughts and actions that accomplish one's own benefit with secular names, and label thoughts and actions that accomplish the benefit of others with Dharma names. Follow Geshe Ben and use your right and left hands to accept and reject. Geshe Ben once said, "I can't find anything else to do except to stand at the gate of the citadel of the mind, pressing down on a counteracting short spear. If he tightens, I tighten; if he loosens, I loosen." He said, "You did something with certainty, striking each pig's snout once."

He said to throw it behind. All sutras and treatises teach that there is nothing else to do but abandon self-grasping. Therefore, this is to show that one should regard oneself as an enemy and abandon self-grasping, which Shapawo's teachings call the "ghost-exorcising and deity-dressing method." Second, to regard sentient beings as close and cherish them is taught by "Meditate on all beings as being very kind." To this, Shapawo's teachings say, "This is the method of taking flesh and taking blood." It is also called "the method of turning bad omens into auspiciousness." Specifically cultivate loving-kindness and compassion towards the one who harms, and practice the exchange of self and others. First, cultivate loving-kindness: For the sentient beings and non-humans who harm me, from beginningless time, they have been my parents, relatives, and their relationships are more numerous than dense forests. Therefore, look at them with loving eyes, care for them with loving hearts, save them from harm and disadvantage, and help them with all benefits and happiness, knowing that they are the only benefactors! Generate a feeling of closeness, even if placed in the heart, it will not feel hot, and treat them like the apple of one's eye. Jowo (Atisha) said, "This is one's own deity and guru." Second, cultivate compassion: The one who harms me now is not doing it intentionally, but because of delusion. In beginningless time, for my benefit, he disregarded all sins, sufferings, and evil words, and thus accumulated afflictions and bad karma, wandering endlessly in samsara, enduring suffering. All these responsibilities are on me. Now, when practicing enlightenment for the benefit of others, my bad karma involuntarily drives this old mother to create obstacles, thus hindering the happiness of all sentient beings, and in the next life, she will also fall into hell, this responsibility is also on me, therefore, generate the thought of "How pitiful!" and cultivate compassion like bare flesh being burned by a spark. In this way, specifically cultivate loving-kindness and compassion towards the one who harms. After cultivating in this way, non-humans will have subtle clairvoyance caused by karma. We only know a little, but they can know a lot. When the thought of motherly love arises in this way, how can they come to harm? If I treat all beings like a mother, all beings will treat me like a child.
