All faults and collections of sins arise from clinging to self. From beginningless time, grasping at the absence of self as self, clinging to this body, the basis of life, as having a self, and engaging in acceptance and rejection based on likes and dislikes for the sake of this body's sustenance. Deceiving others, creating various misdeeds, accumulating afflictions and negative karma, from beginningless time, the cycle of existence is endless in general. All the immeasurable sufferings of the three lower realms are inflicted by this. As it is said, "Though countless eons have passed, with such great effort, you only accomplish suffering." Therefore, if you still do not regard this as an enemy, it will only accomplish its own happiness, accumulate negative karma, and cause you to dwell and wander in endless samsara, suffering more intensely and for longer than before. All the sufferings of the three times are generated by this clinging to self. So, this has been the executioner killing me from beginningless time. From beginningless samsara, no one has been killed by others; they have been killed by themselves. Think in this way, do not oppose it, but treat it as a newly born enemy. So, where does that enemy reside? It resides in my heart. Shantideva also said, "Thus, having been a long-time enemy, the sole cause of increasing harm, having firmly settled in my heart, how can I have happiness in samsara?" Even if this dwells on the head, it does not give victory to the eyes. Thinking in this way, the object or place of such a faulty clinging to self is this body, the basis of life. From beginningless time, clinging to the absence of self as self, clinging to the absence of self as having a self, is the source of all suffering and faults. Cherishing and protecting this corpse, black carcass, lump of pus and blood, bag of serum, is like carrying a bundle of thorns when naked. If you loosen it, you might feel comfortable, but grasping it tightly for your own benefit only leads to more suffering. Shantideva also said, "All the sufferings in the world arise from the desire for one's own happiness; all the happiness in the world arises from the happiness of others."

Born from desire. What need is there to say more? Children work for their own benefit, while Buddhas work for the benefit of others. Look at the difference between these two. Thus it is said. Therefore, among all the afflictions that have harmed me since beginningless time, the most fundamental is this self-grasping. From the virtuous friend above to the small insect below, the sinful, jealous one who accumulates evil is right here. Binding me, not allowing me to be liberated from samsara, summoning all the harm-doers, human and non-human, the owl-headed destroyer is the one who clings to "I" and "mine," the one with a mind only for his own benefit. Think like this, and recognize it as an enemy. Shantideva said: This one, for hundreds of lifetimes, has harmed me in samsara. Now, remembering all the grudges, I will destroy your mind that thinks only of yourself. Thus it is said. Do you still think I won't bother you? It's not like before. This time I have relied on the Lama, and having seen the scriptures, I recognize you as the enemy. The time when you made me disappear is over. Seeing me, where can you go now? I will destroy all your arrogance. Thus it is said. Thinking like that, treat it as an enemy, and whenever a thought of self-interest arises, confront it with "Who do you think you are?" like hitting a pig's snout with a stick. Therefore, the entire content of the Mahayana Dharma is to completely abandon self-grasping and to tightly grasp sentient beings, and there is nothing other than subduing self-grasping and benefiting sentient beings. Furthermore, all the Tripitaka is spoken for the purpose of subduing afflictions. Therefore, what is to be subdued is affliction. There are generally eighty-four thousand afflictions. All of them are condensed into two hundred and twelve. Further condensed, they are the six root afflictions and the twenty secondary afflictions. Further condensed, they are the five poisons and the three poisons. Further condensed, it is just one self-grasping. Therefore, the more thoroughly it is subdued, the more happiness there is. Medium subduing brings medium happiness. Small subduing brings small happiness. No subduing brings no happiness at all. The root of suffering is self-grasping. All faults and errors depend on it. Now, you must abandon attachment to your own body and mind and treat it as an enemy.
