Transforming Adversity into the Path to Enlightenment. Transforming Adversity into the Path to Enlightenment. Third, transforming adversity into a support: When the vessel and its contents are filled with sin, transform adversity into the path to enlightenment. This means that whatever harm befalls sentient beings and the elements, all are the result of having committed sins in one's previous life. Those without a foundation in Dharma will regard adversity as an obstacle. But those who have entered the gate of Dharma see it as Khenpo Ngawang said to Shawogangpawa, that if one has the intention to purify all physical illnesses and mental sufferings, then the Lama and Yidam will bestow blessings and the means to attain siddhis. Therefore, all adversities should be transformed into supports for training the mind of enlightenment. There are two aspects to this: first, training in the special intention—the mind of enlightenment; and second, striving in the special practice—accumulation and purification. First, it is explained how to transform adversity into the path of enlightenment by relying on relative bodhichitta. How to transform it into the path? From beginningless time, because one has not distinguished between enemy and friend, one has not grasped the essentials of what to abandon and what to adopt. Whatever Dharma one has practiced has become Dharma of self-grasping, and therefore it is wrong. Since one has never approached liberation and omniscience, now one must distinguish between enemy and friend and make Dharma the path. Here, the enemy is oneself, and the friend is sentient beings. There is no other way than to regard oneself as an enemy and abandon oneself, and to regard others as friends and cherish them. The reason why oneself is the enemy is: All blame is placed on oneself. This means regarding oneself as the enemy. Whatever unpleasant things happen, do not blame others, but think that it is because of my clinging to self, and place all the blame within oneself. "Whatever harm and suffering there is in the world, all arise from clinging to self. What can the great demon do to me?" And "If there is self, then one knows there is other. From self and other arise attachment and hatred. From the connection of these two, all faults arise." And "Knowing that oneself has all faults, but knowing that others have qualities like the ocean, one should abandon self-grasping and take up others, and one should practice this reasoning." Thus it is said. In the world
