Visualize moving quickly and making the sound 'Phèm Phèm'. In the central channel at the crown of the head, visualize a white 'Ham' syllable (Tibetan: ཧཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हं, Sanskrit Romanization: haṃ, literal meaning: seed syllable) clearly, as if about to drip nectar. When inhaling, let the breath enter only through one nostril. Then, like blowing air with the mouth, exhale the breath from both nostrils simultaneously, allowing it to enter the central channel. When the breath touches the 'A' syllable (Tibetan: ཨ, Sanskrit Devanagari: अ, Sanskrit Romanization: a, literal meaning: seed syllable), visualize it emitting red light. While inhaling and exhaling, focus all attention on this. When exhaling, visualize the breath emerging from the central channel, appearing bluish-green, and then actually exhale through the nose. Once you can focus all attention on this, during the second similar breath, visualize a flame appearing from the 'A' syllable (Tibetan: ཨ, Sanskrit Devanagari: अ, Sanskrit Romanization: a, literal meaning: seed syllable), its size being half a finger, the tip very sharp, burning, possessing four characteristics, like a flame moving up and down. Each such breath causes the half-finger flame to burn, and after eight breaths, the flame reaches the navel chakra. Ten breaths fill the navel chakra's petals with flame. Another ten breaths cause the flame to descend from the navel down to the tips of the toes. Then, ten breaths cause the flame to burn upwards, filling below the heart. Ten breaths fill the throat, and another ten fill the crown of the head, focusing on the burning flame. Like gradually squeezing butter from the sky. With ten breaths, the 'Ham' syllable (Tibetan: ཧཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हं, Sanskrit Romanization: haṃ, literal meaning: seed syllable) at the crown of the head is melted by the flame, and bodhicitta fills the crown of the head. Ten breaths fill the throat, ten fill the heart, ten fill the navel, and ten fill all the way to the tips of the toes. Practice filling and dripping, making one hundred and eight breaths a round. Initially, practice six rounds each day, then reduce to four rounds, etc., adjusting according to the length of the breath. Except for eating and sleep for restoring energy, practice without interruption. This is called the action tummo because it touches the key points of body, mind, and breath. Second, regarding the experience of tummo, there are two types: common and special experiences. First, the common experience is: 'If the breath can be controlled, first the sign of warmth arises, second the sign of bliss appears, third non-thought arises.' 'Thereafter, thoughts gradually cease, like smoke, like mirages, like fireflies, like the morning star, like the sky gradually clearing of clouds.' This means that by striving to prevent the breath from escaping outward, keeping it in its own place, this is called control. Due to this control, the number of breaths flowing decreases, the flow is controlled. The distance of outward flow is shortened, the length is controlled. The strength of outward flow weakens, the strength is controlled. Then, color is recognized, color is controlled. Then, the power of the individual elements subsides, the power is controlled. Thus, by controlling the breath, the waves of tummo become stable. Then, breath and mind become calm, and warmth arises. This causes the chakras to open. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the channels, the wind leads the bindu to travel, causing throbbing in the channels. Throbbing of the bindu, and the arising of the realms of the six destinies, this is the first aggregation, called the time of suffering, or the time of heat. Then, the channels weaken, and the bodhicitta is nourished by the wind and elements, increasing and maturing, attaining infinite bliss with defilements, this is the second, the time of bliss. After that, because the mind clings to inner bliss, the joy of external objects diminishes. Therefore, the poison of continuous conceptualization subsides, and the mind enters into peace, the non-conceptual calm abiding samadhi arises, and becoming accustomed to it, is the third, the time of non-conceptuality. Such calm abiding is not characterized by neutral feeling, but because countless experiences of appearances such as smoke, mirages, fireflies, lamps or twilight, and cloudless sky, etc., arise, it is especially clear. The yogi, during the state of these three aggregations of elements, does not abandon any signs that are present, and does not strive for any that are absent, but spontaneously practices the tummo of action. The wind becomes workable, and no external conditions such as disease and old age can harm it, and infinite qualities such as the five kinds of clairvoyance with defilements arise. Second, the special experience: Because of this, the winds enter into the dhuti (central channel). And, the five special signs and eight qualities. Usually, in the common time, the wind enters the central channel by means of impelling, called the life-force wind entering the central channel. But here, it is called entering the central channel by the power of yoga, the outer and inner winds merge into one, the life-force and downward-moving wind become one mass. From the navel chakra and the secret place chakra of the body, it enters the central channel, and travels back and forth from the center of the four chakras to the center alone, the tummo transforms into the power of the fire of wisdom, and the bodhicitta gathers in all the channels, the knots loosen, and because of that, the five special signs arise: flame, moon, sun, Rahu, and lightning. The body is immersed in the midst of the five rays of yellow, white, red, blue, and reddish-white light. And, the realization of the eight qualities becomes manifest: the quality of earth is the power of the son of non-attachment, the quality of water is flexibility, fire does not burn, the quality of fire is the ability to gather and release all things, not sinking in water, the quality of wind is swiftness of foot and lightness of body. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
