It would be best to attain the extraordinary direct realization. However, without Śamatha (calm abiding), it cannot be accomplished. Merely hearing the instructions on yogic meditation and meditating in solitude is the view of the wise. This is very extensive, the essence of the Sutra Pitaka. It is even more so the essence of the superior mind training. The wisdom that destroys afflictions arises from this. Subduing self-grasping is indispensable. Subduing the mind is like wearing shoes. One cannot completely negate everything seen and heard. The agent is only the mind, the appearance of the apprehended and the apprehender. In the face of individual discrimination, it dissolves like clouds. However, this is very subtle, profound in meaning. Therefore, it cannot be understood by anything other than faith. It is easy to find by entering the blessings of the Lama, like extracting oil from sesame seeds. This is the meaning of many hundreds of thousands of Dharma teachings. It is the key to settling and generating certainty. Because it resides in the sheath of scripture and reasoning, it is also given the name 'essence of the heart'. Nor Dzin Wangmo (person's name) manifestly entered the teachings, Her encouraging words, like a white lotus, bloom. Pleasant words, like the sound of chatter, delight the minds of beings, may this be virtuous! In Kyisho, these are the instructions given while serving as the administrator for the venerable Taklung Ma Wadanpa Rinpoche. This is the advice to Khri Pon Jigje Gyalpo (person's name): When abiding in suchness, all phenomena of Samsara and Nirvana are pacified. Therefore, the Buddhas have not seen, do not see, and will not see any Dharma. Obscured by the sleep of ignorance, everything appears like a dream. By seeing it as true, Samsara and Nirvana arise. Therefore, delusion and non-delusion, appearance and non-appearance, one and many, existence and non-existence, emptiness and non-emptiness, etc., the Lama says are all valid. Therefore, the establishment of distinctions is necessary for those who are deluded. Therefore, the Two Truths are taught to realize the meaning by relying on conventions. Conventions are like the finger pointing at the moon, like gestures such as 'come here'. They are merely words that express meaning, and one cannot exhaustively examine all that is to be known. Like a mute person dreaming a dream, like a youth experiencing the pleasure of union, one cannot show it to others, the realm of the sacred that is beyond example. Therefore, ultimate truth is not nothing, but it is very inclined towards the side of 'existence'. It is neither existence nor non-existence, nor is it both. Therefore, it is taught as the Great Madhyamaka. It does not abide in any extreme, it is the unchanging bliss of complete severance, and the name of emptiness that possesses all supreme aspects. Distinguishing by negation, the meaning is the same. This is our tradition's Mahamudra. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Nyingma school calls it 'Dzogchen'. The base is it, the path is it, and the result is it. Ultimately, it is established as one yana. All dharmas are not other than it, all conceptual thoughts are Dharmakaya. All afflictions are Jnana. Whatever is seen in front, behind, or in the ten directions, is it itself. There is nothing to be obtained, and nothing to obtain. Therefore, there is no meditation and nothing to be meditated upon. Since that is the case, what is there to practice? Everything is equal and pervasive. This is Padmasambhava's advice to Khri dpon 'Jigs byed rGyal po. This is the advice from Khar Tse. All phenomena of samsara and nirvana are created by karma. Good and bad karma depend on one's own mind. For a person with a good mind, all perfections arise naturally, so tame your own mind. Thus advised. Advice to the lay devotee Tsewang Kyab (dge bsnyen tshe dbang skyabs): Rely on one qualified Lama. If the longing of devotion is strong, becoming a Buddha is not difficult. Focus your mind and you will know the truth. This is the advice to the faithful lay devotee Tsewang Kyab. Be sure to subdue the ego-clinging that is definitely the enemy. Be sure to protect the sentient beings of the six realms who are definitely relatives. If the meaning of self and other is not established, it is just a thought. Skillful means is called Bodhicitta, the cause of Buddhahood. Thus also advised. Advice to Namtso Dopa Chenpo Chodrub Palzangpo (gNam mtsho do pa chen po Chos grub dpal bzang po): If you do not know how to rest the mind in its natural state, even if you stay in a high mountain retreat, it is not seclusion. If you cannot subdue the demon of ego-clinging, even if you wander in a charnel ground, it is not secret conduct. If you do not know how to not deviate from your own path, even if you explain and discuss the Dharma, it is not beneficial. If listening to the Dharma does not calm your mind, you are just accumulating useless things, not someone to be tamed. If you do not practice with mindfulness and awareness, even if you are covered with robes, you are not a Bhikshu. If you cannot tolerate harm from those you have not cared for, even if you speak of tolerance, it is not tolerance. If the doubts in your mind are not pacified, even if you change your name, you are not pacified. If you cannot tame yourself, listening to what others say is not being a Dharma practitioner. This is the advice to Namtso Dopa Chenpo Chodrub Palzangpo. Advice to Gyalwa Zangpo (rGyal ba bzang po): You should look to the deeds of the predecessors. Attachment to this life is the cause of samsara. It is the fetter that binds you forever. Abandon it today, that is called 'renunciation'. Cultivate the conduct of non-attachment and non-clinging. Too much thinking is the cause of wandering. Extensive learning cannot be exhausted. Practice according to the key instructions and cultivate them. This is what all the Lamas have unanimously said.
