Just as fire arises from firewood, and once the fire has arisen, it burns the firewood completely. Similarly, when the power of wisdom arises, it burns away the very 'cause' that produced the wisdom.' This is what the scriptures say. Therefore, how can the so-called 'union of experience and realization' be the combination of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality arising from formless quiescence, with the realization of insight? Considering the emptiness of the object's nature as realization, and the luminosity of the subject's nature as experience, and combining these two is called 'union of experience and realization'. 'Bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality—these three are the essence of meditation.' Here, bliss refers to unchanging supreme bliss, clarity refers to self-luminous nature, and non-conceptuality refers to emptiness itself. Considering these three as the essence of meditation is because they do not change until Buddhahood. Therefore, the scriptures say so. And the insight that is explained as the union of quiescence and insight is the general meaning of insight. The quiescence in the union of quiescence and insight is not the quiescence mentioned here. Abiding in the realm of pacifying elaborations is quiescence, and the aspect of clear awareness that arises from that realm is insight. This is the meaning of the union of quiescence and insight. Initially, the mind is quiescence, like the immovable (seed syllable, Tibetan: ཨཱཿ, Sanskrit Devanagari: आ, Sanskrit Romanization: āḥ, Chinese literal meaning: Ah) and so on, what is seen is insight.' This is what the scriptures say. Not only in the treatises of Chandrakirti, but also Dharmakirti said: 'Without refuting the object of perception, there is no ability to refute it.' This is because when the object is established as devoid of inherent existence, the establishment of the subject's real existence is easily destroyed. Therefore, the object must first be established as devoid of inherent existence. The *Collection of the Noble Ones Sutra* says: 'Consciousness is the near shore, destroying consciousness leads to the far shore.' As the teacher Shantideva said: 'How seeing, hearing, and knowing, need not be refuted here, here one should refute the cause of suffering, the delusion of clinging to reality.' Establishing the subject's consciousness as devoid of inherent existence, the object will naturally be established as devoid of inherent existence. Therefore, one should first establish consciousness as devoid of inherent existence. 'Abandoning all thoughts and what is thought about, abide freely like a young child, rely on the guru's instructions, and practice diligently, then there is no doubt that co-emergent wisdom will arise.' Also, 'How wondrous! This is self-awareness wisdom, beyond the path of words, not within the realm of mind. Tilopa, I have nothing to show, only self-knowing self-awareness.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Having said that, Saraha's teachings are very much in line with the lineage of the supreme Tilopa and Naropa. That master, without first engaging in rational analysis, eliminates attachment to objects by becoming accustomed to the yoga of tranquility. By becoming accustomed to the practice of discriminating wisdom, one eliminates the attachment to tranquility and emptiness, thereby giving rise to a fully pacified, characteristic realization. By becoming accustomed to the attachment of emptiness, one will eliminate the attachment to objects. By becoming accustomed to 'nothing at all,' one will also eliminate it from the outside. When there is nothing, the object to be examined cannot be identified. At that time, the non-object is free from dependence; how can it exist before the mind? When neither object nor non-object exists before the mind, since there is no other aspect, it is completely pacified without an object.’ Thus, in the context of the mantra path, the views of those masters converge. That is to say, the knowable is merely imputed by the knowing mind, and it only appears to be true due to the power of ignorance. Until the knowing is determined to be untrue, even if one establishes the non-existence of the knowable in hundreds of ways, the clinging to the truth of the knowable cannot be eliminated. Therefore, our lineage is good. Here in the Land of Snows (Tibet), the difference between so-called 'analytical meditation' and 'placement meditation' lies in whether or not one first engages in rational analysis. Those who are called 'analytical meditation' because they first engage in analysis will ultimately converge on 'placement meditation,' because they too must allow the mind to rest without alteration. Just as Lord Atisha (Jo bo rje) said in his 'Essence of the Middle Way': 'The mind does not discriminate anything, does not cling to anything, abandoning all memory and attention.' Nowadays, some people regard resting without alteration as an enemy, thinking that their own stages of practice are very profound, and regarding it as emptiness, selflessness, and non-inherent existence. Such people cannot possibly walk the path of the noble ones. As the noble Nagarjuna said in his 'Explanation of the Mind of Enlightenment': 'No birth, emptiness, and selflessness, these are all emptiness. If one cultivates an inferior self, that is cultivating self here.' Therefore, the path is completely reversed. In the noble Ratnakuta Sutra, it is also said: 'Even if a Bodhisattva realizes that this aggregate is empty, he will not cling to signs and will not believe in the state of no birth.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
