It is merely a designation in name, but in reality, it is solely Samadhi. This state is called the Union of Two Bodies (Kaya-dvaya-yuganaddha), where the self-benefiting Dharmakaya (chos kyi sku, 法身) does not move, while the other-benefiting Rupakaya (gzugs sku, 色身) appears; and as the other-benefiting Rupakaya arises, the self-benefiting Dharmakaya does not move, hence it is explained as Union. As stated in the Uttaratantra (rgyud bla ma, 宝性论): 'Without moving from the Dharmakaya realm, with various natures of emanation, manifestly showing birth,' and so on. Also, as stated in the Dohakosa (do ha, 多哈歌): 'The non-dual mind-tree, pervades entirely the three realms, the flower of compassion blooms, holding the fruit of benefiting others.' Just as in the Paramita Vehicle (phar phyin theg pa, 波罗蜜多乘), due to the cessation of the path and entering the path, the Path of No More Learning is established, here too, due to the exhaustion of what is to be meditated upon and the meditator, it is called the Yoga Without Meditation. As stated in the Dvadasakara-tantra (brtag gnyis, 二观察续): 'No meditation, no meditator, no deity, no mantra. In the nature of non-proliferation, deity and mantra truly abide.' And 'Vairochana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha, Amoghasiddhi, the Bodhisattvas.' Also, in the Guhyasamaja Tantra (dpal 'dus pa, 密集金刚) and the Kalachakra Tantra (dus kyi 'khor lo, 时轮金刚): 'Without substance, there is no meditation; what is to be meditated is not meditation. Thus, with substance and without substance, meditation is without object.' This is clearly explained in the state of fruition. Saraha's Dohakosa says: 'Coemergent bliss is like nectar, the nature of continuous flow, like a river and the sky, unchanging and always present. Conceptual thought follows consciousness, never knowing its true meaning. The realm without thought is always absent, how can there be meditation without an object? The state of no meditation does not exist either, the meaning written in the example, is no different from the Buddha's mind.' Thus, this explanation of the sequence of the four yogas, for the ease of understanding of those with lesser intelligence, was composed by the Bhikshu Pema Karpo (dge slong pad+ma dkar pos, 比丘白莲) at the summit of the Tashi Thongmon Monastery (bkra shis mthong smon gyi gtsug lag khang, 吉祥现喜寺), in the Abode of the Elders (gnas brtan lha khang, 常住天殿). May this also bring vast benefit to the teachings! Mangalam! Mangalam! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
