Collection of Teachings by Omniscient Pema Karpo PK282: Explanation of the Four Yogas, Showing the Essential Points as a Direct Instruction Explanation of the Four Yogas, Showing the Essential Points as a Direct Instruction Homage to Jetsun Ngagi Wangpo! To those who have experienced the definitive meaning but are lacking in mere words, I shall speak thus: Knowing the self-nature of movement within the state of abiding, and establishing the self-awareness of abiding within the state of movement, the boundary between abiding and movement collapses, which is called realizing the self-nature of single-pointedness. Gaining confidence in liberation within the state of confusion, and recognizing the flaws of confusion within the state of liberation, the boundary between confusion and liberation collapses, which is called realizing the self-nature of non-elaboration. Knowing the way the mind dwells within the state of appearance, and understanding the way appearance arises within the state of mind, the boundary between appearance and mind collapses, which is called realizing the self-nature of one taste. Not moving from the natural state of dharmata in the post-meditation state, and compassion naturally bursting forth in samadhi, the boundary between samadhi and post-meditation collapses, which is called realizing the self-nature of non-meditation. Among these, the first refers to: in the state of abiding, without distraction, a movement arises for a moment and immediately dissolves on its own. This is called 'knowing the self-nature of movement within the state of abiding'. Not developing from a momentary movement into one to two, but immediately returning to abiding, this is called 'establishing the self-awareness of abiding within the state of movement'. At this time, knowing the momentary arising and purifying the movement are simultaneous. Movement does not arise on top of existing abiding, but rather moves because it is slightly unable to abide. However, through the merit of establishing the awareness of abiding, it immediately knows and returns to abiding. Regarding this, some say: 'Shamatha is like the ocean being still, Vipassana is like a fish darting about.' At this time, knowing the arising is also the merit of abiding. The one who recognizes in this way is called 'awareness' or 'discriminating wisdom'. By examining the signless shamatha with this, the characteristics of Vipassana arise. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: 'Just as an elephant maddened by intoxication is tightly bound to a great pillar of mindfulness, so too, diligently cultivate this samadhi, not losing it for even a moment. Where does my mind wander? Thus, examine the mind separately.' Furthermore, Kyabje Rinpoche said: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is said that 'a state of non-mentation, unclear, and dazed' is called 'non-mentally dazed, unpredicted'. If one mistakes this for Śamatha (calm abiding) and cultivates it, it is said that these people will be reborn as animals. This is in accordance with what Jetsun Sakya Pandita (one of the founders of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism) said: 'Fools meditate on Mahāmudrā, mostly becoming the cause of animals'. So, what is the difference between Śamatha and this state? Śamatha has the experience of bliss, clarity, and non-mentation, and is able to perceive subtle sensations, even knowing the slightest movement of hair, while non-mentally dazed does not have these. 'Bliss, clarity, and non-mentation, these three are deviations in practice'. Therefore, merely the experience of bliss, clarity, and non-mentation of Śamatha will lead to falling into the three realms. Otherwise, one will be born in the formless realm. When one is familiar with Śamatha, agitation dissolves into the Dharmadhātu (法界), thus producing a thick Śamatha. One can remain in Samādhi (三摩地) continuously for seven days. If one is familiar with this, one can even transcend kalpas (劫), thus transforming into Nirodha-samāpatti (滅盡定). Or, one will fall into the cessation of Śrāvakas (聲聞). At that time, it is said that the Samādhi needs to be broken. As Chöje Tsangpa Gyare (a high-ranking Kagyu master) said: 'Many know how to meditate, few know how to break'. And Ba Ra Wa said: 'Great meditators are deceived by meditation'. Even if the Samādhi is broken, it will reveal the key to transcending elaboration. If that person is good at rebirth, there is nothing higher than the practice of Madhyamaka (中觀). Merely through this level of analysis, thinking that one cannot transcend the path of the Sutras (經部), the Kagyu Rinpoche (precious one) cherishes the key points such as 'the power of practice lies in devotion'. Furthermore, Gyalwang Rinpoche (possibly referring to the Karmapa, the leader of the Kagyu school) said: 'There is doubt about liberation through practice, there is no doubt about liberation through devotion. This is the difference between having the key and not having the key'. This is very consistent. If one does not understand such a key, and says that this method also hinders Mahāmudrā, it is entirely because one lacks the wisdom to thoroughly distinguish the path of Śamatha. The yoga of Śamatha itself, from high to low, is described as the nine stages of abiding. And here, merely starting from focusing on one point, one transcends elaboration, therefore one does not need to rely on the nine stages of abiding. How could this be impermissible? The teacher Hero (possibly referring to a Buddhist master) said: 'For those who do not incline to your doctrine, blinded by ignorance, even if they reach the peak of existence, they will still suffer'. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
