Understood. Both teachers stand up, and the teacher says: 'Bodhisattva (Sanskrit: Bodhisattva, short for Bodhisattvasattva, meaning a sentient being seeking enlightenment) so-and-so, listen. This is the nature of reality (Sanskrit: Dharmata, the inherent nature and state of things)! When a Bodhisattva's action of properly taking the Bodhisattva vows is complete, in all Buddha-fields (Sanskrit: Buddhakṣetra, the world taught by a Buddha) in the ten directions (referring to the ten directions of east, south, west, north, southeast, southwest, northeast, northwest, up, and down), such signs will appear to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas: those Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will know that in a certain Buddha-field, a Bodhisattva named so-and-so has received the Bodhisattva vows from a Bodhisattva named so-and-so.' Therefore, those Buddhas, the Bhagavan (Sanskrit: Bhagavan, the Buddha who possesses six virtues), and Bodhisattvas will regard them with loving-kindness, like sons and brothers, and by thinking of them in this way, the accumulation of merit (Sanskrit: Puṇya, merit, good deeds) and wisdom (Sanskrit: Jñāna, the understanding and knowledge of the truth of things) will increase.' Having said this, he signals to be seated. The teacher also says: 'Bodhisattva so-and-so, listen. Taking the Bodhisattva vows should not be spoken in front of those who have no faith. Because if the Bodhisattva vows are taught to those who have no faith, those sentient beings without faith will abandon the Bodhisattva vows because they do not believe in them. Thus, if abiding in the Bodhisattva vows brings a great accumulation of merit, then those without faith will accumulate a great mass of non-merit. Because a Bodhisattva should completely protect sentient beings from all suffering and prevent others from doing evil. Therefore, the supreme Bodhisattva should keep it secret.' This is to prevent speaking indiscriminately. Then the precepts (Sanskrit: Śikṣāpada, precepts) are proclaimed: 'A Bodhisattva who has generated the mind of enlightenment (Sanskrit: Bodhicitta, the mind of aspiring to Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings), if overly attached to gain and respect, praises himself and slanders others, this is the first root downfall (Sanskrit: Parajika, head-severing offense, referring to the most serious offense) of a Bodhisattva. If one possesses wealth, but suffers from a miserly nature, and is unwilling to give material things to the poor, helpless, and those who come to beg, and is stingy with the Dharma for those who seek it, not sharing the Dharma, this is the second root downfall. Abandoning merely because of speaking harsh words... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, it increases such entanglement of anger. Overwhelmed by anger, he strikes sentient beings with his hands, fists, or sticks, causing harm, becoming very arrogant, and only harboring thoughts of anger in his mind. Even if others advise or teach, he does not listen, does not endure, and does not abandon this thought. This is like the third of the defeat-like acts. Slandering the Bodhisattva's Dharma treasury, deceiving oneself or others, and believing in actions that are disguised as the holy Dharma, liking, contemplating, and adhering to these actions that are disguised as the holy Dharma, this is the fourth of the defeat-like acts. If one practices any of these four defeat-like acts with great entanglement, one will lose the Bodhisattva's precepts. Therefore, you should avoid these acts with shame, caution, and embarrassment. Furthermore, strive to guard against being defiled by offenses that are afflicted and unafflicted. If there is no Lama, when taking the vows oneself, one only needs to pray: 'May all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas be mindful.' This, as said by the Youthful Moonlight, is the tradition of the Lamas between me (the author) and my reliance, the venerable Drukpa Rinpoche, without adulterating the secret of oral transmission. It is said in the Bodhisattva Bhumi Sutra that briefly taking the two types of Bodhicitta is: 'May I attain the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, benefit all sentient beings, and establish them in the ultimate Nirvana and the wisdom of the Tathagatas.' Reciting this three times is aspiration. In front of the deity or the assembly of holy beings visualized, expose one shoulder, kneel with the right knee on the ground, or squat, join the palms, and say: 'I, named so-and-so, pray to the Tathagatas of the ten directions and all the Bodhisattvas residing on the great earth. In their presence, I will undertake all the trainings of the Bodhisattvas, all the precepts of the Bodhisattvas, namely the precepts of restraint, the precepts of gathering virtuous dharmas, and the precepts of benefiting sentient beings, as all the Bodhisattvas of the past have trained, and as all the Bodhisattvas of the future will train.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
