Not seeing the earth, one will always be happy. Seeing the virtuous is happiness, seeing the learned is happiness. Seeing the Arhats who are completely liberated from rebirth is happiness. A level riverbank is happiness, beings who are accustomed to the Dharma are happiness. One who has attained wisdom is happiness, one who has exhausted pride is happiness. Those who are determined and have subdued their senses, even growing old in peaceful monasteries, are happy. The learned, dwelling in the midst of forests, passing their old age, are happy. This is the praise of the Pratimoksha Sutra. Venerable ones, half of the first month of winter has passed, and half remains. Venerable ones, old age and death are approaching, and the teachings of the Teacher will also decline, so venerable ones should diligently practice with mindfulness. The Bodhi of the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, and other virtuous Dharmas that are in accordance with it, the factors of enlightenment, are also attained through mindfulness. The Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples has few affairs and little business. What should be done first in the Sangha? Venerable ones, ask those who have not arrived whether they consent and are pure, and after asking, announce it. As soon as the Elder finished speaking, the Karmadana began distributing the counters to count the number of Bhikshus. Whether or not the boundary has been established, or if the Karmic boundary has not been established, the Sangha is like a naturally established boundary. If the number is insufficient, it will not be done unless it is necessary to prevent it. For those who have not arrived, consent and purity can be requested sequentially or simultaneously, with the latter being done in front of the former. Venerable ones, please listen to me. Today is the fifteenth or fourteenth Uposatha day of the Sangha. I, Bhikshu so-and-so, am ill, suffering, and seriously ill, and also observe the fifteenth or fourteenth Uposatha. I, named so-and-so, am completely pure from all obstructive Dharmas. I say this. I request the Sangha to act in accordance with the Dharma. My Uposatha is also completely pure. Consent and purity have also been announced, and the announcement has also been understood. Say this three times. Then, the one who receives the counters announces to the Sangha: Venerable Sangha, please listen to me. Today is the fifteenth or fourteenth Uposatha day of the Sangha. In such-and-such a place, Bhikshu named so-and-so, also observes the fifteenth or fourteenth Uposatha. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Bhikṣu (fully ordained monk) named Bro Tsalwa (Bravo) has the sole aim of completely purifying all obstacles. I offer my intention to the Sangha (community) to act in accordance with the Dharma (teachings), and may the Karma (action) also be purified. This intention and purification have both been stated, and the meaning of what has been stated is also clear. Recite this once, and no more is needed thereafter. Then, the elder states: Before Śākyasiṃha (the Lion of the Shakyas), with palms joined, recite the Prātimokṣa (code of monastic discipline). For the sake of taming beings, please listen to me. After hearing the Dharma, one should diligently follow the teachings of the great sage (Maharṣi), being cautious even of the slightest transgressions. Constantly with diligence, tame the difficult-to-control mind like a wild horse, and fasten it with the nail of mindfulness to the reins of Śīla (moral discipline). If someone can stop evil deeds with words and not transgress boundaries, like a well-trained horse, they will surely triumph in the battlefield of afflictions. If there are no reins, one will never be content and will surely be disturbed by afflictions, wandering without a place to settle. This is what should be done first. Sangha, please listen, today is the fourteenth or fifteenth Upoṣatha (observance day) of the Sangha. If the Sangha deems it the right time and permits it, please allow the Sangha to hold the Upoṣatha today and recite the Prātimokṣa. This is the request. Venerable ones, we should observe the Upoṣatha and recite the Prātimokṣa. If any of you have transgressed, confess it. If not, remain silent. If you remain silent, I will know that all of you are pure. In this way, ask in order, and the Bhikṣu should answer in this assembly. The Bhikṣu should also proclaim it three times in this assembly. Establish the topic of discussion and cause them to remember it. If there is a Bhikṣu who, in this assembly, after being proclaimed three times, knowingly remembers and sees a transgression but does not confess it, it is knowingly telling a lie. Venerable ones, the Bhagavat (Blessed One) said that knowingly telling a lie is an obstructing Dharma. Therefore, a Bhikṣu who wishes to be purified should confess the transgressions that they remember and see. If they confess, they will abide in happiness, but if they do not confess or acknowledge, they will not. Venerable ones, I shall recite the Prātimokṣa. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
