The appearances of the six realms, each distinct. The pure worldly appearance is the self-appearance of the ten bhūmis. The appearance of true wisdom is the spontaneously accomplished ground appearance. It is like the sun and butter lamp abiding in their own radiance. As stated in the Explanatory Tantra: The nature of appearance and its defining term, and the distinctions, are explained with their respective metaphors. First, the distinctions are twofold: extensive and concise. The extensive one has four aspects: the six appearances of attachment to the six realms, the ten appearances of causal mind, one appearance of the meaning of the realized (442) one, and the non-dual Samantabhadra appearance. The concise one has three appearances: the impure deluded appearance, the pure worldly appearance, and the appearance of true wisdom. First, what is to be explained extensively is the six appearances of attachment to the six realms. In this very object of appearance, where the mandala of knowable things is unceasing, hell beings see hot and cold. Pretas have three appearances, outer, inner, and common appearances. Outwardly, food appears as pus and blood, and clothes appear as thorns. The common one is that food appears guarded by protectors. Inwardly, without protectors, eating it causes poison. That is the appearance to the three kinds of pretas. Animals have two appearances, those immersed in it see darkness, and those scattered see upwards and downwards, and uninterrupted food and drink appear directly. Humans have this very appearance, villages, places, houses, and so on. Asuras see weapons, and gods see jewels and nectar. Mind appearance is the habitual tendency of attachment. The ten appearances of causal mind. The appearance of eternalists (443) among the tirthikas is also that nothing other than permanent entities appears. The appearance of nihilists among the tirthikas is also that if this exists, there is no future life, this appearance arises suddenly, and when it disintegrates, it dissolves into the five elements. Nothing other than non-existence appears. Śrāvakas see yak tail whisks, atomic particles, and aggregates as indivisible. Grasping and the objects of grasping always appear. Solitary realizers commonly tend towards emptiness of one aspect. In the aggregates and elements, they see emptiness of selflessness. The Sūtra school sees ultimate truth as superior. Conventional appearance is seen as mere illusion. The Kriya Tantra, both outer and inner, is similar to the Sūtra school in ultimate truth, but conventional appearances are seen differently. The Kriya sees the three families as lord and subjects, the Upayoga sees gods and master and servants, the Yoga sees siblings and friends, the Mahāyoga sees self and deity appearance, the Anuyoga sees the expanse and wisdom, and all see cause and effect.
