Furthermore, they are born among the five Pure Abodes gods of the Pure Abodes and attain liberation. Moreover, from that state of meditation with great fruit, one becomes accustomed to a state of non-discrimination towards any state of calm abiding. If, like the clear autumn sky, all phenomena are not established, and only the clarity of awareness is manifest without interruption, a meditation arises that is different from before, this is the attainment of the mind of the sphere of infinite space. Now, if one dies in the state of having attained this mind, one will be born there. Then, again, becoming accustomed to that state, if even the clarity and purity like space does not exist, and only the consciousness focused on one point inwardly, with conceptual thoughts pacified, (188) a meditation arises that is different from before, this is the attainment of the mind of the sphere of infinite consciousness. If one dies here in that state of mind, one will be born there. Then, becoming accustomed to that state, if only the inner proliferation is pacified, and even the subtle sensation of feeling disappears, a mind of calm abiding focused on one point arises where there is nothing, different from before, this is the sphere of nothingness. Now, all those who die from being accustomed to that mind will be born there. Then, becoming accustomed to that state, if the mind that grasps at nothingness also merges into the single calm abiding where neither existence nor non-existence is established, a dense state arises that is different from before, without any discrimination, this is called the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. If all those who are accustomed to this, but do not possess skillful means, die, they will be born there. This is called the attainment of the mind of the peak of existence. Relying on this, by blocking feeling and perception, one obtains the meditation that blocks worldly feeling and perception, that is, the four meditations and the four formless meditations, ultimately the nine successive abidings in equipoise. Moreover, even if the noble ones manifest these minds (189) and cultivate them, they will not be born there. So, why are ordinary beings born in those places? Because when each of them cultivates meditation and the formless states, they call the meditation of the coarse mind coarse. Because there are no coarse thoughts such as hatred, they will not be born in the lower realms, and for the upper realms it is peaceful. Because they know it has qualities, they cling to it as something to be desired and cultivate it with attachment, so they will be born in higher and higher realms. So, even if there is such a meditation

Furthermore, why do we wander in samsara? Because we do not recognize our own nature, and we have not realized with the wisdom that knows that all phenomena in the alaya consciousness are without inherent existence, the habitual tendencies of innate ego-grasping. Therefore, even if we repeatedly generate such samadhi, we still wander in samsara. As the noble Nagarjuna said: 'Those such as Brahma who have not severed the innate ego-grasping, is it not absurd that they are born in hell after death?' Also, because that samadhi diminishes mental proliferation and grasping onto objects, and generates the divine eye and superknowledges, it only suppresses manifest afflictions. (190) Because there is no genuine vipashyana, we continue to wander in samsara. The Compendium says: 'Through samadhi, one desires to despise the qualities of desire, and one accomplishes lineage, superknowledges, and samadhi. Through wisdom, one completely knows the nature of phenomena, and thus completely transcends all three realms.' Second, unerring samadhi. Thus, when abiding in the bliss and joy of the samadhi of the great fruition mind, through the samadhi that is seized by the means of whichever path of the Hearer, Solitary Realizer, or Bodhisattva one has entered, one is placed in a state of clarity and non-conceptuality. When does one directly see the non-conceptual wisdom of the path of seeing that one has not seen before? Although one has attained the state of an arya with the mind of the samadhi of great joy, it appears small compared to the wisdom of the higher aryas, so the mind of a not-great deva arises. The first bhumi of a Bodhisattva is the Extremely Joyful. By familiarizing oneself with such a mind, one again generates a clearer and non-conceptual mind that is more excellent than before (191) and possesses the aspects of the eightfold noble path, and because one is separated from the suffering of afflictions and near afflictions, it is a non-suffering mind. That is also the three of the small path of accumulation, namely the attainment of the second bhumi of a Bodhisattva, the Stainless, the third, the Illuminating, and the fourth, the Radiating. Then, by again familiarizing oneself with that, one attains the excellent, most principal wisdom of the aryas that one has not had before, namely the Difficult to Train, which is the three of the middle path of accumulation. The fifth bhumi of a Bodhisattva is the Extremely Difficult to Train, the sixth, the Manifest, and the seventh, the Gone Afar. Then, by again familiarizing oneself with that, one attains the extremely pure wisdom of the aryas that is even more excellent than before, the high
