From the Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: 吽) at the throat, an unbroken chain of Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: 吽) syllables arises, gradually coiling from the root of the support up to the crown, then release it slightly and rest. Again, gradually unravel it, gather it inward, and completely dissolve it into the Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: 吽) at the heart, then rest. In this way, by uniting wind, mind, and Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: 吽) into one and practicing going out and returning within, like traveling on a path, the arrogance of discursive thoughts is pacified, and mental pliancy is attained, enabling one to transform any object of focus at will. This is the meaning of seeking a companion. Fourth (559), entering the path: Unite your body, wind, and mind into one, visualizing them as a blue Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: 吽) syllable, then enter the path in front of you, like an ant's trail, and proceed, resting slightly at the bends. Imagine that you have reached the distant, boundless shore, and recite the Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: 吽) syllable at length, then rest naturally. Again, return as before and rest in your original state. Initially, this will give rise to experiences of varying intensity, such as joy and sorrow, but eventually, body and mind will be pervaded by uncontaminated bliss. This will set body, speech, and mind on the correct path, naturally cutting off discursive thoughts, and giving rise to clear and blissful non-conceptual experiences, so maintain that state. The necessity of these is threefold: commonly, it purifies the sins of speech and pacifies obstacles (560); especially, it reverses the attachment to speech, preventing one from falling into samsara. Ultimately, speech vajra will effortlessly transform into the complete enjoyment body. Third, the preliminaries of mind are threefold. As it is said in the Ornament for Clear Realization: "Mind's place of arising first, Abiding in the middle and last, Thus examining these three, Mind tamed, mind's nature known." Therefore, first examine the place of arising of the mind: What is this so-called mind, the knower and mover that experiences all happiness and suffering? From where does it arise? Does it arise from the external world of containers and the internal world of beings, or from any of the four external elements? If so, then break them down into atoms and search for it, to see if you can find it. Or do you think it arises from within your own body? If so, then search for it in the various parts, to see if you can find it. If you think it arises from emptiness, then is the place of arising established? If you think it arises from appearance, then can its object be found? (561) In short, examine the mind that is to be sought outwardly, and look inwardly at the mind that is searching, and in this way, all its nature cannot be determined.

Until the very face of one's own nature, which is free from [all limitations], is seen, one must forcefully cut through and repeat [the process]. Secondly, examining the place of abiding: As before, where does it abide—in the external, internal, vessel and essence, parts of the body, etc.? By examining and analyzing what it is represented by—shape, color, function, essence, etc.—if none of these are established anywhere, then by looking back at the consciousness that cognizes, although the consciousness is clear and apparent, its own nature is not established. Therefore, until it is thoroughly determined to be without basis or root, repeat [the process]. Thirdly, examining the place of going: When a thought suddenly arises and vanishes, where does it go? By examining, there is no place of going anywhere—external, internal, vessel and essence, appearance and emptiness, existence and non-existence, etc. The very nature of the mind that possesses an object is also separate from the essence of what this [mind] is, and all that is determined. Therefore, since there is no place to go and no mind that goes, until it is thoroughly determined to be free from awareness-emptiness, going and coming, repeat [the process]. The purpose of these is threefold: In general, it purifies the sins of the mind and pacifies obstacles; in particular, because the mind's clinging is reversed, one will not fall into samsara; ultimately, the mind becomes the vajra dharmakaya, becoming non-dual. As it is said in the Klong gsal: The preliminary practice of body, speech, and mind, common, special, and ultimate, should be known as having three purposes. As it is said. Furthermore, the aforementioned purposes are also explained as two, with the first two being common and the last being supreme. As it is said in the Thal 'gyur: There are two purposes for this, to be measured by the distinction of common and supreme. As it is said. Thirdly, settling into the natural state has two aspects: settling into the (563) natural state itself, and restoring. First, showing the necessity of settling into the natural state, and the manner of how to settle. First, as it is said in the Klong gsal: The arising and disturbance of body, speech, and mind, settle into the natural state in order to liberate them. As it is said. That is, whether it is a conceptual thought to be abandoned, which is a dharma of samsara, or a virtuous conceptual thought, which is an antidote dharma, whatever appearance arises, focus the awareness single-pointedly on that appearance and meditate. The conceptual thought will then transform and become non-conceptual. For example, just as muddy water becomes clear when left undisturbed. That is, if one initially forcefully blocks thoughts, not only will the mind not abide, but it will also become an obstacle, and it is considered difficult to generate samadhi. Therefore, it is also said in the Sutra Ornament: Whoever
