The striking of the Ghandi should be done quickly. 4-45 Furthermore, when gathering for monastic practices, it should be struck three times in the manner of meal gatherings. However, for Dharma practices and listening to the Dharma, the single-toned Ghandi, known as 'small Ghandi,' is not necessary. Moreover, if a major disharmonious act occurs within the Sangha, the striking should be done in conjunction with the Sangha's supplications. The one performing the action of urging the Ghandi should strike it vigorously without rhythm, like striking a stupa without a top. This is similar to hanging a bird's corpse on the dead Ghandi mentioned earlier. Also, the single-toned and three-toned Ghandis mentioned earlier are named so because they resemble the top of a stupa. Ninth, the time for striking: As it says in the text: 'At meal times, sunrise and sunset, three times a day; during bathing, praise three times; in case of sudden disasters, lack of rain, conflicts, debates, reading, major calamities, diseases, and famines, strike in order without confusion.' Therefore, it should be struck at the appropriate times. Tenth, the person who strikes: As it says in the text: 'Monks and novices should strike at appropriate times; during the Uposatha, even lay practitioners can strike.' This means that even pure lay practitioners can strike. The striker should be someone who is aligned with the Dharma, i.e., possessing the Buddhist view and conduct; it should not be struck by someone who is not aligned with the Dharma, i.e., someone possessing the views and conduct of non-Buddhists. Also required are a normal physical state without transforming into the form of a tiger through magical powers, and a mind free from defects such as madness, remaining in its natural state. In particular, it is said that the person appointed to perform the action of striking should be the one who strikes. Eleventh, what are the faults if the material, size, striking method, etc., of the Ghandi do not meet the aforementioned criteria? As it says in the text: 'If the Ghandi is made of inferior wood, or if enemies arise when striking, or if the Buddha-mother is disturbed when striking, then local disturbances will certainly occur. Monks in the monastery will likewise have disagreements and various disputes will arise. Non-Buddhists will gain power, and demons will also appear. Many malicious nagas will destroy the crops. 4-47 Fruits.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

will cause them to diminish. As stated above, the benefits that arise from below will diminish. Twelfth, the benefits of possessing the qualities mentioned above are: As it is said in the scriptures: 'In whatever kingdom the sound of this Ghandi is heard, that kingdom will be filled with glory and fame, desires will be fulfilled, and crops will be abundant.', 'Enemies will not be able to invade, and fruits will not diminish.', 'Through the blessings of the Buddha, demons will be subdued there.', 'Hell, hungry ghosts, and other evil realms will undoubtedly be terrified.', 'All beings will believe in the Dharma, and all beings will be devoted to the Dharma.', 'The Sangha there will be disciplined, and the wise will increase.', 'Greed, hatred, and ignorance will subside there.', 'By beating this drum of Dharma, whoever hears its sound, whenever they hear it, will attain Bodhi.', Thus it is said. With my innate and broad wisdom eye, I can understand the meaning of any scripture I look at. If some learned people are surprised by this, wouldn't it be worth marveling at? Those with little knowledge, not understanding themselves and not asking others, just make random guesses about everything, which will only lead to the destruction of themselves and others. This is the final conclusion on the number of times to urge (to strike the Ghandi). Third, the judgment on the disputed points regarding the number of times to strike the Ghandi is: Some great scholars believe that in order to gather the Sangha for their respective Dharma activities, there are various ways to strike the Ghandi, such as striking three long tones followed by three short tones, striking three long tones followed by two short tones, striking one long tone followed by three short tones, striking one long tone followed by one short tone, and so on. Here, the term 'long tone' refers to the number of times each strike is made, just as (the Buddha) Dragon King is surrounded by seven dragons, gradually increasing from one to eighteen times, and gradually decreasing from nineteen to thirty-six times. Striking in this way once is called a 'long tone', and three such strikes are called three 'long tones', totaling one hundred and eight strikes, plus three short tones, totaling one hundred and eleven strikes.', Thus it is said. There are three problems with this: it contradicts the analogy, it contradicts reason, and it contradicts the scriptures. First, the contradiction with the analogy is that if (the Buddha) Dragon King is surrounded by many dragons, especially being respectfully surrounded by the eight great Dragon Kings, etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
