Collected Teachings of Ngawang Kunga Sonam ANK33: 'A Good Explanation of the Gandi Ritual - The Seven Horse Kings Opening the Lotus of the Clear Mind' 'A Good Explanation of the Gandi Ritual - The Seven Horse Kings Opening the Lotus of the Clear Mind' General Explanation of the Classification of Gandi 'A Good Explanation of the Gandi Ritual - The Seven Horse Kings Opening the Lotus of the Clear Mind' Homage to Guru Buddha Dhvaja Flag). The Sakya school is the holder of the complete teachings. Homage to the five supreme masters, as well as the lineage masters, Ngorpa Vajradhara, Muschen Great Bodhisattva, and the views of great beings like the ocean. May the Omniscient Teachings Sun (Kunkhyen Tenpai Nyima), who is skilled in explaining the uncommon secret meanings, always be victorious! Homage to the all-knowing son of Suddhodana (Shakyamuni Buddha). The Sangha is the root of the teachings. In order to increase and develop the teachings, I will now explain the Gandi ritual called 'Seven Kings'. I hope that the learned and wise will read carefully, draw it into a diagram, understand it themselves, and also spread it to others. By doing so, both self and others will be accomplished. Alas! Nowadays, most of those who enter the gate of Dharma are satisfied with only knowing the names of the scriptures. Therefore, do not be satisfied with just knowing the name of Gandi, please enjoy this explanation! Here, the classification of Gandi is generally divided into three types: first, a general explanation of the classification of Gandi; second, a separate explanation of the Gandi ritual; and third, determining the necessity of the number of times the Gandi is struck. First is the first classification. The sutra says: 'The Gandi is struck to gather the Sangha, and its position is above.' To gather the Sangha, strike three long sounds and the same number of short sounds. For work, strike one long sound and three short sounds. Some strike three long sounds and two short sounds. To liberate the dead, strike the cymbals. Some strike one long sound and one short sound. To expel, strike the hand bell. Some strike the small Gandi. When a disaster occurs, strike the appropriate number of times. To gather the Sangha for meals, strike both the Gandi and the small Gandi. Pause in the middle and be slow. If striking the Gandi cannot notify everyone when a large gathering is held, then blow the conch shell and strike the big drum. These, as stated in the sutra, can be divided into five types: gathering Gandi, work Gandi, expelling Gandi, death Gandi, and dispersing Gandi. First is the gathering Gandi, which is used for Dharma assemblies and approaching virtuous friends, etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That is, three strings and three taps. The three strings are: first, starting from a weak force, gradually increasing the force to strike until eighteen times; then from nineteen to thirty-five, gradually decreasing the force to strike. One such cycle is one string, and three such strikes are three strings. The three taps are: striking three times with great force and clear intervals, for a total of eight strikes. The second situation is: gathering at workplaces, etc., using three strings and two taps. The third situation is: when the Sangha enters meditation, the sound of the wooden fish (Tibetan: གཎྜི,Sanskrit Devanagari: गण्डि,Sanskrit Romanization: gaṇḍi,Chinese literal meaning:犍稚) is struck, as the sound of the gaṇḍi. In addition, cymbals, conch shells, hand drums, and large drums can also be regarded as the sound of the gaṇḍi. The fourth situation is: when the Sangha passes away or the body is carried away, only one string is used, without any taps. The fifth situation is: when disasters occur, such as: damage to the teachings of Buddhism, the Sangha committing major acts that are not in accordance with the Dharma, or severe hail that is harmful to crops, or when enemies, robbers, and thieves appear who harm the Sangha's enjoyment and behavior, the gaṇḍi should be struck violently and without a fixed number of times. The following is a detailed explanation of its classification. Second, a detailed explanation of the classification of the gaṇḍi, there are twelve types: material, size, shape, striking position, placement position, number of strikes, method of striking, time of striking, person striking, faults, benefits, a total of twelve. First, the material of the gaṇḍi: as stated in the 'Gaṇḍi Sutra': 'Trees that are desired for wealth should be diligently sought.' These include: Goshing tree, white sandalwood, shala tree, billa tree, broadleaf tree, palasha tree, pippala tree, ashvattha tree, red sandalwood, red sandalwood, ashvara tree, tala tree, rajata tree, kemsuka tree, aguru tree, pasha tree, pishi tree, and tamala tree, churi tree, willow tree, gora tree, asma tree, buskuru tree, tantipara tree, ashoka tree without sorrow. If these are not available, efforts should be made to use the osela tree. The king should strive to use these in all cases, and if these are not available, the gaṇḍi should not be made.' Therefore, it is said that sixteen types of trees such as white sandalwood can be used to make the gaṇḍi. Regarding the osela tree, some scholars believe that it is a milky or watery tree, while others believe it is the sendeng tree. In some documents, the writing of osela is incorrect, it should be 'osala, efforts should be made to use it.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
