Therefore, if those woods above are not found, any kind of wood will do.’ This is stated in the scriptures. Second, the size of the gaṇḍi (wooden fish): As it says in the same text: ‘The size should be measured in finger-widths, the length should be eighty-four finger-widths, the width should be six finger-widths, and the height should be two finger-widths. The measurements of the finger joints, the measurements of the four corners are two finger-widths.’ As it is said, the large size is one hundred and eight finger-widths in length, the small size is eighty-four, and the medium size is in between. Furthermore, there are also gaṇḍis of twelve and twenty-four finger-widths. Third, the shape: As it says in the same text: ‘It should be beautiful, perfect, and very clear, with two ends like the head of a frog.’ As it is said, the shape should be six finger-widths in width, two finger-widths in height, with eight sides on the four corners, each side two finger-widths, and the two ends should be like the head of a frog. Fourth, the striking object: The mallet for striking the gaṇḍi should also be made from the same wood, the part that strikes the gaṇḍi should be twelve finger-widths long, and the length of the handle to be held should be the same, with the two ends like the head of a mongoose. As it says in the same text: ‘Then, the mallet for striking, should also be carefully made from the same wood. The length should be twelve finger-widths, with two ends like the head of a mongoose, and the length of the handle should be the same.’ Fifth, the place to put it: As it says in the same text: ‘Wherever it is struck, it should be placed on a throne below, above the door of the temple, or above the central hall.’ As it is said, it should be placed on a throne above the door of the temple or above the central hall of the temple. Sixth, the place to strike: It should be struck in a place above the temple, etc., where the sound of the gaṇḍi can be heard by all. Seventh, the consecration: Meditating on the emptiness (stong pa, Sanskrit: śūnyatā, Romanization: shunyata, literal meaning: emptiness) of the three states of arising, abiding, and ceasing of the dharmakāya (chos sku, Sanskrit: dharmakāya, Romanization: dharmakāya, literal meaning: Dharma body), unborn from the beginning, and with devotion to the great mother of goodness (yum chen mo), then reciting auspicious verses: ‘Consecrate it to be a firm dharmakāya, neither arising nor ceasing, unborn from the beginning, and virtuous.’ After consecrating it in this way, it is considered to be opened. Furthermore, in the introduction, it is also said: ‘When King Clear Victory (gyalpo gsal gyal) requested the Bhagavan (bcom ldan 'das, Sanskrit: bhagavan, Romanization: bhagavan, literal meaning: Blessed One) to counteract the three poisons (dug gsum), at that time, the great mother Prajñāpāramitā (yum chen mo shes rab kyi pha rol tu phyin pa, Sanskrit: prajñāpāramitā, Romanization: prajñāpāramitā, literal meaning: Perfection of Wisdom) was present in the form of a gaṇḍi.’ Therefore, it should be respected in any way, such as with a seat and clothing, and should not be disrespected. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes. Eighth, regarding how to strike the [gandi] (犍稚,a wooden or metal percussion instrument used in monasteries): In general, as mentioned above, the methods of striking are limitless. 4-43 For example, when the Sangha (僧团,community of practitioners) gathers for meals, the small [gandi] (犍稚) should be struck once, with one continuous sound, and one tap. The large [gandi] (犍稚) should be struck three times, with three taps. Also, when the Sangha (僧团) gathers for listening to the Dharma (佛法,teachings of Buddhism), practicing the Dharma (佛法), etc., the small [gandi] (犍稚) should be struck once, with one tap. The large [gandi] (犍稚) should be struck three times, with three taps. Regarding how these are struck, there are three aspects: intention, preparation, and the actual practice. First is the intention: Visualize the [gandi] (犍稚) as the Great Mother, strike it to request the turning of the Wheel of Dharma (法轮,the teachings of the Buddha), visualize the sound of the [gandi] (犍稚) as the sound of the Prajnaparamita (般若波罗蜜多,the perfection of wisdom) and other Dharma (佛法) teachings, and generate the intention to benefit the Dharma (佛法) and sentient beings, etc. Second is the preparation: As it is said in the scriptures, 'Go there, prostrate to the Three Jewels (三宝,Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha) and then strike.' Therefore, go to the place where the [gandi] (犍稚) is struck, and strike it with prostration to the Three Jewels (三宝) as the preliminary. Third is the actual practice: Recite 'Shang Tsal Lang Sal' three times, and then strike the Dharma (佛法) drum. Like being adorned by the seven Naga (龙王,serpentine deities), strike according to the generation stage. Thus, first, for those Sangha (僧团) members who are abiding in meditation, to avoid the sound of the [gandi] (犍稚) being too loud and causing disturbance, recite 'Shang Tsal' three times. 4-44 Then, the method of striking the raised [gandi] (犍稚), or the one known as the small [gandi] (犍稚): From one sound to eighteen sounds, gradually increase in volume, and from nineteen sounds to thirty-five sounds, gradually decrease in volume, and then make one loud tap. The reason for the interval between the small [gandi] (犍稚) and the [gandi] (犍稚), during which it is not struck, is: During this time, the person striking the [gandi] (犍稚) recites the Pratimoksha Sutra (别解脱经,code of monastic discipline) himself, or if he is not familiar with it, he recites the confession of downfalls. The Sangha (僧团) members also rise from meditation, and while reciting the confession of downfalls, they prepare their bowls, etc. Then, the method of striking the large [gandi] (犍稚) is to strike three times, with three taps. That is, from one sound to seventeen sounds, gradually increase in volume, and the eighteenth sound is very loud. From nineteen sounds to thirty-five sounds, gradually decrease in volume. Repeating this three times is called three rounds. Then, make three loud taps. During this time, the Sangha (僧团) members gather completely. Also, when the Sangha (僧团) gathers to listen to the Dharma (佛法), it is the same as the three-round striking method described above, but slightly weaker. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
