Therefore, I inquired about obstacles. Because the ordinand answered truthfully and it was confirmed that there were no obstacles, the matter was accomplished. Regarding favorable conditions, there are five conditions: place, lineage, intention, action, and conformity. The place requires the presence of a Buddha's image, diligence in studying the Dharma, the existence of karma rituals, and the non-decline of the true Dharma, all of which are present. Since the novice ordination arises from an individual, it is acceptable even if the full number of the Sangha is not present. The abbot is endowed with perfect qualities, and when a monk is requested to be the abbot, there needs to be an acceptance. In this case, the ordinand has requested me to be the abbot, and my acceptance fulfills this requirement. The preceptor is also able to communicate the procedures for bestowing the novice ordination upon the ordinand's lineage, which I am capable of doing, thus all the necessary conditions for the place are met. The condition of lineage conformity requires having received the lay vows up to the novice vows without having broken them, and so on, which are all present. The condition of conforming signs requires abandoning the attire of a householder and possessing the attire of a renunciate, which are all perfectly present. The condition of conforming intention includes the intention of the cause, which is the desire to receive the vows; the intention of the time, which is knowing how to receive the vows; being free from the five definite opposing factors; and all of these being encompassed by the intention of renunciation. First, just as one who is thirsty desires water, there needs to be a sincere desire to take the novice vows, which is also perfectly present. The intention of the time, which is knowing how to receive the vows, can also be accomplished during the actual ceremony, so it is also present. Second, being free from the five definite opposing factors means that from this moment until the end of life, one must have the intention to protect the novice vows in all times, places, and for all beings. All of these are encompassed by the intention of renunciation. If one acts with Dharma but without the intention of renunciation, it will become either fear of suffering or hope for happiness, and will not become the path to liberation. To become the cause of liberation and omniscience, it needs to be encompassed by the intention of renunciation. As the root sutra says: 'Having taken the power of the discipline of definite renunciation.' The Three Hundred Disciplines says: 'The discipline of definite renunciation abandons suffering.' Therefore, the intention of renunciation is also important. The Mindfulness Sutra says: 'Beings in hell are consumed by hellfire, hungry ghosts are tormented by hunger and thirst, animals devour each other.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Beings decline because their lives are short.' Just as the gods decline due to their carelessness. In samsara, which is like the tip of a needle, there is never any happiness.' So it is said. Lord Maitreya (Sanskrit: Maitreya, loving-kindness) also said: 'Just as there is no fragrance in impure things, so there is no happiness in the five realms of existence.' Jetsun Rinpoche (Tibetan: Jetsun Rinpoche, precious lord) also said: 'To achieve nirvana, one must abandon attachment to the three realms. To abandon attachment to the three realms, one must remember the faults of samsara.' So it is. The meaning of these words is: If we examine the realms of sentient beings, none are free from the nature of suffering. The beings in hells experience unbearable suffering of heat and cold, the pretas (hungry ghosts) experience the suffering of hunger and thirst, animals experience the suffering of being eaten by one another and the suffering of ignorance and delusion, asuras (demigods) experience the suffering of fighting, and even the gods cannot avoid the suffering of being reborn in the lower realms after death. Among humans, the powerful experience mental suffering, and the lowly experience physical suffering, the suffering of not getting what one wants, and the suffering of encountering what one does not want. In short, no one can escape the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death. Therefore, we should abandon this suffering-filled samsara and attain the peace of nirvana. For this purpose, please generate a strong desire to take the novice vows! This renunciation is also present in Hinayana practitioners. But now we are going to take the Mahayana vows. The 'Treatise on the Three Vows' says: 'With the motivation of bodhicitta, acting according to the Vinaya of the Shravakas, the eight types of individual liberation vows are transformed into the individual liberation of a Bodhisattva.' So it is said. Just as space is endless, so are sentient beings endless. Among these endless sentient beings, there is not one who has not been our parent. These sentient beings who have been our mothers countless times are so pitiful! Just saying 'pitiful' is of no help. We must liberate them from suffering and place them in a state of happiness, but I do not have the power to do so now. Even Brahma, Indra, Shravaka Arhats, and Pratyekabuddhas, who are greater than me, do not have this power. So who has this power? Only the fully enlightened Buddha has this power. Therefore, for the benefit of all sentient beings, I must attain the state of perfect and complete enlightenment. For this purpose, from this moment until the end of my life, I will take refuge in the Three Jewels, and take and keep the novice vows. Please generate such a strong desire! The Actual Ceremony: The welcoming ceremony. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
