Therefore, I request you to be my Khenpo (Khenpo, Preceptor). The meaning of Khenpo is that he demonstrates the trainings through three ways—negation, establishment, and teaching—and because he keeps us from falling into a lower state, he is called Khenpo. Or, he directly connects us with the precious trainings and guides us to transcend suffering from the continuum, therefore he is called Khenpo. In short, I wish you would be the one who ordains me to definitely emerge from all contaminated samsara, please repeat these words. 'Teacher, please listen, I, named (own name), request the Teacher to be my Khenpo. Teacher, please be my Khenpo. Teacher Khenpo, please ordain me.' It needs to be repeated three times, please repeat the second time. From 'Teacher, please listen' to 'please ordain me.' On the third repetition, you will become the Khenpo. This third statement has three parts: up to 'request you to be the Khenpo' is the first part, up to 'please be my Khenpo' is the second part. At the end of that sentence, I will become the Khenpo of you and me. Then, do not say 'Teacher Khenpo,' but say 'Khenpo Khenpo.' Please keep that in mind and repeat the third time. From 'Teacher, please listen' to 'Khenpo Khenpo, please ordain me.' This is the method of requesting the Khenpo. The one to be ordained should say 'Good.' After requesting the Khenpo, one should cultivate the perception of seeing the Khenpo as the teacher, and treat him with respect, offer wealth, serve and respect him, and ask the Khenpo about all actions, and act according to his instructions. Otherwise, transgressing these will constitute the fault of violating the request to the Khenpo. Next is the duty of the Khenpo. A Bhikshu (Dge slong, Monk) says: 'This Bhikshu named (name of the one to be ordained), please cut the hair of this one to be ordained.' Then, that Bhikshu comes in front of the one to be ordained, and asks the one to be ordained: 'Are you willing to cut the hair of you named (name of the one to be ordained)?' The one to be ordained should say 'I am willing.' Then, that Bhikshu offers the hair cut from behind the one to be ordained to the Khenpo. The Khenpo places the hair in front of the Buddha image, and says: 'May the gods who delight in the Dharma generate special joy.' Then, the Khenpo says to the one to be ordained: 'Let this Bhikshu follow you and do the five-limbed bath.' After the bath is completed, the one to be ordained... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Upon arriving before the Khenpo (Khenpo, Abbot/Teacher), one should touch the Khenpo's feet with one's head to receive blessings.' Having said this, the candidate is made to prostrate three times, touching the ground with five points (knees, elbows, and forehead), with their head touching the Khenpo's feet. Then, the candidate sits squatting in front, with the monastic robe draped over the left shoulder. Both the Khenpo and the candidate hold the edge of the Dharma garment with their left hand, covering it from above with their right hand. The Khenpo says: 'This garment, called the upper robe, is the monastic robe that is usually worn. It is distinct from the clothing of householders and non-Buddhists, reminding one of the ascetic life, and protecting one from the harm of heat and cold from mosquitoes, flies, the sun, and wind. Therefore, one should always carry such a Dharma garment.' Having said this, the Dharma garment is moved to the candidate's right shoulder, and the lower garment is handed over. The teacher and student hold it as before. 'This garment, called the lower garment, is worn on the lower body, protecting one from nakedness and shame, preventing harm from mosquitoes, and distinguishing one from the clothing of householders and non-Buddhists. It reminds one of the ascetic life, so one should always carry such a garment.' The alms bowl is given, and both the teacher and student hold the alms bowl in the palm of their left hand, grasping the edge of the alms bowl with their right hand. The Khenpo says: 'This is called the alms bowl. It is distinct from the eating bowls of householders, the begging bowls of non-Buddhists, and the utensils of other inferior renunciates. Just as it is filled with food, so too should one fill one's mind-stream with merit. Just as one enjoys food from within it, so too should one enjoy the sacred Dharma. It is a vessel shown by the Teacher for accumulating merit that is free from extremes, therefore, one should carry such a vessel.' The sitting mat is given, and both the Khenpo and student hold it in their hands. 'This is called the sitting mat. It is different from the white mats of householders and the motley mats of most people. Except for the grass and leaf mats of the Sangha, one should rely on this when resting.' Then the water strainer is given, and both the teacher and student hold it in their hands. 'This is called the water strainer. It is the Buddha's teaching revealed through compassion, Therefore, one should always carry such a Dharma garment.' Having said this, the Dharma garment is moved to the candidate's right shoulder, and the lower garment is handed over. The teacher and student hold it as before.
