Because of the close connection (with life), for water, carefully check whether there are living beings. If you cannot find water without living beings, then filter it with this (water strainer) before using it. Therefore, it is necessary to carry such a water strainer. This shows that for any utensil, one must not harm living beings.' After saying this, the Khenpo (preceptor) places a small amount of rice and other flowers on the head of the ordinand. Holding the ordinand's utensils, he stands up and stands in front. The Khenpo scatters flowers and recites the following aspiration: 'May the banner of liberation be firm! May the Brahmacharya (pure conduct) be perfected to the end of life! May the aggregate of morality be complete! May one be ordained in all lifetimes!' After reciting this, the Khenpo says to the assistant: 'Please have this Bhikshuni (nun) named... teach the ordinand how to wear the robes properly, and also please complete my work.' Next is the ordination ceremony for the intermediate person: The ordinand, having properly worn the Dharma robes, etc., is made to prostrate to the Khenpo three times with the five limbs touching the ground from the cushion, and then made to sit cross-legged on the cushion with hands folded at the heart. The Khenpo says: 'It is very good that you have generated the thought of ordination! The good reason is that in the Sutra of Joyful Ordination it says: 'Householders are like dwelling in a pit of fire, renunciants are like dwelling in a cool pavilion.' And in the Sutra of Displaying Great Miracles it also says: 'If someone, while living at home, attains this supreme Bodhi, then no such Buddha has ever appeared in the past, nor will there be one in the future.' etc. Therefore, all the Buddhas of the three times attain Buddhahood based on the support of ordination. Giving away children and wives for countless eons to all sentient beings of the three thousand worlds, or making offerings to the Buddha with flowers, etc., is not as meritorious as generating the mind of ordination and taking seven steps in the monastery. Moreover, the ordination mentioned here does not refer to inferior ordinations, such as those of the Tirthikas (non-Buddhists). From the words of the ritual, it is known that King Shakya is the main one, and I will also follow him into ordination.' To perform ordination, three transformations are necessary: Changing the signs and attire: Abandoning the signs and attire of a householder, transforming into the signs and attire of an ordained person, this is complete. Changing the mind: Abandoning worldly thoughts. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those people's desires and thoughts have immeasurable faults. In general, in order to abandon this suffering nature of Saṃsāra (cyclic existence), make the determination to renounce and attain Nirvāṇa (liberation). Even Śrāvakas (hearers) and Pratyekabuddhas (solitary realizers) have that much. Here, for the sake of all sentient beings, may I attain the state of complete and perfect Buddhahood. For that purpose, generate a strong mind of renunciation. Changing those, changing the surname on the forgotten slip, can be changed to end with 'Glorious' and 'Excellent', or end with the name of the Upādhyāya (preceptor). Please repeat these words. Upādhyāya, please listen, I will speak from this name, which is the Dharma name to be accomplished. From this time forth, until the end of my life, I take refuge in the Buddha, the best of bipeds. I take refuge in the Dharma, the best of those without attachment. I take refuge in the Saṃgha, the best of assemblies. The Bhagavan (Blessed One), the Tathāgata (Thus Gone One), the Arhat (Worthy One), the perfectly and completely enlightened Buddha Śākyamuni. Śākya Siṃha (Lion of the Śākyas), Śākya rāja (King of the Śākyas). O Lord, following the renunciation, I renounce the signs of a householder. I take the signs of renunciation correctly.' Repeat three times. 'This is the method for practicing as an intermediate renunciate.' Say that. The practitioner should answer 'Good'. Having renounced in this way, since it is said to abandon the signs of a householder, abandon those white clothes and ornaments, etc., that are contrary to that. Leaving long hair and beards, shaving the hair that is not in accordance with mindfulness, abandoning the actions of householders such as trade. Since it is promised to take the signs of renunciation, abandon those heretical signs and behaviors that are contrary to that, and abide in the purity and asceticism of renunciation. Having completed the intermediate renunciation in this way, then proceed to the formal Śrāmaṇera (novice) ordination. Have the practitioner prostrate three times to the body of the teacher from the cushion, and prostrate three times to the Upādhyāya himself. Have him sit upright on the cushion, and have him join his palms at his heart. 'Oh, you are taking the Śrāmaṇera vows, you need to abandon the four obstacles and have the five conducive conditions complete.' Are the four obstacles that obstruct the arising of vows, the abiding of vows, the increase of vows, and the perfection of the basis not present?
