Collected Teachings of Ngawang Kunga Sonam ANK32, which includes 'A Clear Explanation of the Necessary Rituals for Taking Refuge as a Novice Monk and a Lay Follower'. 4-14 ༄༅། །A Clear Explanation of the Necessary Rituals for Taking Refuge as a Novice Monk and a Lay Follower. ༄། །Preparation. ༄༅། །A Clear Explanation of the Necessary Rituals for Taking Refuge as a Novice Monk and a Lay Follower. ༄༅། །Namo Guru Buddhaya Dharmaya Sanghaya. Homage to the Guru, Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha). Homage to the Guru and the Omniscient One! Here, regarding the ritual for first taking refuge as a novice monk, there are three parts: preparation, main practice, and conclusion. First, to examine whether one is suitable for ordination, it is necessary to inquire about obstacles; to gradually guide one into the Dharma, it is necessary to grant the vows of a lay follower; to uphold the discipline of a novice monk, it is necessary to perform the ordination ceremony. Among these three, the first is: Have the person to be ordained sit cross-legged in front and tell them: 'You are about to be ordained, and you must not have any factors that would interrupt the lineage. If one is ordained with obstacles, it will cause the vows not to arise, or even if they arise, they will not be maintained, etc. This will not benefit your lineage, and it will also bring faults to us, so it is necessary to inquire about obstacles.' As it is said in the Root Text: 'The initial Abbot should inquire about obstacles in order to grant permission to those who are completely pure.' Therefore, please do not be distracted and answer my questions truthfully: 'Are you not a follower of other religions?' The person to be ordained answers: 'No.' 'Are you not under fifteen years old?' 4-15 'Are you fifteen years old and able to drive away crows?' 'I am able to drive away crows.' 'Are you not under seven years old?' 'Are you not a slave or of similar status?' 'Are you not in debt?' 'Have you not received permission from your parents?' 'Have you not received permission from your parents, and is your residence not far away?' 'Are you not ill?' 'Have you not slandered a Bhikshuni?' 'Are you not ordaining for the purpose of theft?' 'Are you not currently in a state of confinement?' 'Are you not a person who should not reside in the Sangha?' 'Are you not a eunuch?' 'Are you not a hermaphrodite?' 'Are you not a transformation?' 'Are you not an animal?' 'Are you not someone who has already joined another religion?' 'Have you not killed your mother?' 'Have you not killed your father?' 'Have you not killed an Arhat?' 'Have you not caused a schism in the Sangha?' 'Have you not maliciously drawn blood from the Buddha?' 'Have you not committed any of the four root downfalls?' 'Are you not someone who does not accept punishments contrary to the lineage and has been expelled from the Sangha?' 'Are you not someone with physical disabilities such as crippled hands?' 'Are you not someone with unsightly features such as yellow hair?' 'Are you not someone with incomplete body parts such as having only one fingernail?' 'Are you not someone who has been banished by the king?' 4-16 'Have you not received permission from the king?' 'Have you not received permission from the king, and is your residence not far away?' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is he not known as a thief? Is he not an outcast? Is he not a shoemaker? Is he not a Chandalas (outcaste)? Is he not a person of low status? Is he not a non-human being? Is he not an unpleasant sound from the north? Is he not a triple name? Is she not a woman who looks like a man? Is he not one who has the characteristics of sin? Is he not born from another place, with a different appearance? If they say no, then I will ordain you. Second, the ritual of becoming a Upasaka (layman) in order to gradually learn the Dharma is: First, have the person to be ordained prostrate to the teacher three times with the five points touching the ground. Then have them prostrate to themselves three times. Then have the person to be ordained squat in front, with their palms together at their chest. You must gradually learn the Dharma because the root Sutra says: 'Without fully taking the vows of Upasaka, Shramanera, and Bhikshu, one should not take the higher vows.' Therefore, one must first take the vows of Upasaka. There are many kinds of Upasaka vows, but now, in order to make you a complete Upasaka, please think like this: Wherever you are in the three realms of Samsara, it is a place of suffering. Whoever you associate with is a companion of suffering. Whatever you enjoy is nothing but an enjoyment of suffering. Therefore, the refuge that saves us from Samsara, which is of the nature of suffering, is the Three Jewels. Taking refuge in the Buddha, request the guide to the path of liberation. Taking refuge in the Dharma, request the actual path of Nirvana. Taking refuge in the Sangha, request the companions who practice the path. Thus, may we attain the state of complete Buddhahood, which is non-abiding Nirvana. For this purpose, from this time until death, take and protect the complete Upasaka vows. Thinking, 'Please Venerable Ones, accept me as a member of the Sangha who holds the five precepts,' and then repeat these words. 'Venerable Ones, please listen,' etc., until 'Guard it well with your mind.' According to the Upasaka vow-granting ritual that I have done, or just simplify the explanation. Third, in order to take the Shramanera's discipline and ordain, you need a Khenpo (preceptor). If you do not request a Bhikshu with seven qualities to be the Khenpo, he will not become a Khenpo. Therefore, through the request, and he agrees. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
