Just as seeing a potter indicates the existence of pottery, seeing bedding, food, clothing, etc., that accomplish one's own benefit, one infers the existence of a self. If there were no self, then striving on the path would be meaningless, as it would not be for anyone's sake, thus refuting the desire for non-self, etc. Whatever is said by outsiders who claim there is a self is entirely meaningless, because for a self without distinct characteristics, there cannot be its distinct qualities and valid proofs. If the self were permanent, there would be no different states of acting and experiencing, nor states of pleasure and pain, high and low, pure and impure, etc. If it were singular, there would be no diverse arrangements of characteristics, etc. If it were an independent ruler of all, there could be no impermanence or undesirable occurrences. If it were pervasive, then with everything simultaneously present, the distinctions of intimacy and distance, self and other, virtue and vice, etc., in fleeting actions would be unreasonable. When the nature of the self is never observed by valid cognition, the sign of seeing things that accomplish its benefit is not established, like saying a barren woman's clothes. If you ask whether bedding, etc., are not the self's appropriation, even without a self, they are appropriated because they benefit the aggregates and the continuum. If there is a self, there can be no path to liberation, because in the system that claims there is a self, there is no path to abandon self-grasping. If self-grasping is not abandoned, then through attachment to the self, one will continuously take rebirth in the three realms and never be free from samsara, so there is no way to liberate from samsara. Those who assert no-self have liberation, because, contrary to the above, through having no acceptance or rejection, nirvana is achieved, free from attachment to the three realms. Accomplishing benefit and averting harm are not for the sake of having a self, but because, relying on the continuum of the aggregates of no-self, one is established as an agent and experiencer, etc. For example, the name "chariot" is applied in dependence on the collection of its own parts. The parts, such as the wheels, and the chariot are not the same, nor are they separate from their own parts, so the parts and the whole with parts are not mutually possessed. The whole does not exist in the parts, nor do the parts, such as the wheels, exist in the whole, the chariot. The collection of parts and the shape of the collection are...
