So, how is aggregation established? If the subtle particles that transcend the senses exist in their own independent manner and cannot generate sensory consciousness, then these particles combine with other particles, becoming causes and effects to each other, and manifest a connection. Therefore, the special particles capable of generating sensory consciousness, when transformed into other states, or when about to produce such states, are called aggregation. The so-called aggregation does not refer to a general and independent entity with branching parts. The particles in this state of aggregation, possessing the special ability to generate sensory consciousness, are the reason for the arising of cognitive consciousness. Due to the law of dependent origination, aggregation can generate sensory consciousness, just as the collection of object, sense faculty, and attention can generate consciousness, and without aggregation, it cannot arise. Second, Master Vasubandhu said: 'What is to be grasped by the eye, etc., as the self-characteristic object of the sense base, is considered to be the collection of the five consciousnesses, but not as the self-characteristic of a substance.' Because of this statement, both this treatise and the Compendium of Topics consider sensory consciousness to be an object of general characteristics. If one thinks so, then the meaning of the scripture is not like that. That is to say, in the Abhidharma, it is said: 'Sometimes only blue can generate eye consciousness, and sometimes a collection of blue, yellow, etc., generates eye consciousness.' If one clings to the collection of the five objects of form, sound, etc., then how is this a self-characteristic object? To this objection, Master Vasubandhu replied: 'Whether blue, yellow, etc., are independent or aggregated, as long as it is the nature that can generate eye consciousness, that is the self-characteristic of the sense base, and these similar things are called one entity of the sense base.' Such clinging is like seeing a variegated color, where all colors such as blue and yellow can be one self-characteristic of the sense base, but at that time, it is not that the self-characteristics of each entity such as blue are taken as objects separately, but it must be clung to as one object of self-characteristic, but rather all are clung to simultaneously. Saying this is to refute the opponent's misunderstanding that it is said that one does not cling to each part such as blue, but clings to the general characteristic. Saying that the object of general characteristics in this way means that without aggregation with other particles, one cannot generate sensory

The special particles of energy also do not exist, and if such a collection of particles becomes capable of generating sensory abilities and is suitable to exist as an object, then is it certain that consciousness only arises in one part of the object, such as a particle, and not in other parts? It is not certain, because consciousness arises equally in all collections there, so it is said to be the object of the particle collection or the common generality, but it is not said that the collection or the generality itself is the object of sensory perception. Therefore, ordinary senses never grasp subtle particles individually. Even if the collection is the material sensory object of the birthplace (āyatana), it does not grasp subtle particles, but grasps as many parts as can be grasped. Even then, there is no coarse matter other than the parts, so in the end, neither subtle particles nor coarse matter can be suitable as sensory objects, so they only appear to exist, and external objects do not exist, which will be explained below. Second, to prove according to the meaning of the scriptures. Refuting wrong views and eliminating them. First, if the object of sensory consciousness is one birthplace (āyatana), then it is a clear general or a partless substance with limbs. It does not grasp multiple parts at the same time. Second, the answer: Sesame seeds and other things are not grasped at the same time, it should be the established proposition; Variegated colors are not grasped at the same time, it should be the established proposition; Knots and other things are not grasped at the same time, it should be the established proposition; Various things are not known at the same time, it should be the established proposition. First, things and refuting their faults. First, if it is impossible to grasp multiple things at the same time, then how can sesame seeds, mustard seeds, rice, and other different grains be seen as being grasped at the same time when they are placed in the same container without sticking together? Such an appearance is established by direct perception and cannot be denied. Different kinds of substances existing separately will not be considered as having one limb. Second, if you say that although they are grasped separately, the illusion of appearing at the same time occurs because the mind enters quickly. Before, letters will also be noticed at the same time. Etc., it has been explained that this is unreasonable. In addition, sesame seeds, etc., are scattered from the sky, How can the appearance of grasping them simultaneously and out of order not occur? Because even with fast grasping, this will happen. In addition, all the minds that grasp objects enter in an instant.
