Pages 501 to 600. Pages 501 to 600. Therefore, regarding things like the vase as a substrate and qualities like blueness as attributes, the hearing of "this is this," that is, the application of sound, is different in meaning from the thing itself, but the sound expressing that thing is not so related or dependent, but merely distinguished from other things, that thing and its different sounds are combined, because the meaning of things is not different. Therefore, combining different things like kinds into one is applied by concept, but such a thing is impossible in the thing itself, so in the sensory consciousness that manifests the self-characteristic of things, there is no such concept. Second, refuting the concept of name combination. Saying that seeing has no concept. If there is, it is too much. First, proving the contradiction between seeing and concept. Like concept, seeing has no concept. First, the concept of name combination is that when sensory consciousness sees things like a vase, it wants to hold the thing that includes the name of the vase. Such is unreasonable, because the concept of holding a name is a consciousness with the reason of remembering the sign of what the thing is. And it is also aimed at a mixed image, so it is the nature of mixing what is seen before and after into one. Contrary to this, because holding what is before and after as one, how can there be a concept born of name in the sensory consciousness that sees the self-characteristic, such as the eye consciousness of emptiness? Because it only holds the unmixed appearance of its own time, it is impossible to mix what is before and after. Second, divided into: too much with things and others. First, for the thing that is being seen, if there is a mind that applies the concept to other things such as the past that are not that thing, then at that time, the eyes constantly see forms etc. that are not the object of concept, there, the sign of the thing that is being clearly seen is not held. Because experience proves that two concepts do not arise simultaneously. Therefore, for the thing that is being seen, there is also no concept produced by the sign of that thing itself. For example, when seeing a vase while conceiving of a pillar, only the image of the vase appears, but there is no concept of thinking "this is a vase." Second, if all sensory consciousness is a concept that holds the mixture of sound and meaning, it is too much. Because when determining the sign of anything, a concept will necessarily arise for the thing that the sign refers to, therefore the consciousness born of the senses

Furthermore, even if the object itself lacks inherent characteristics, it can enter anywhere according to one's own desires, merely through signs and effort, just like conceptual consciousness. If that were the case, the actual appearance of external objects would not be clearly seen, because it is merely an object that enters according to desire, and it is a consciousness that does not need to rely on the apprehended meaning. If it is said that when the apprehended meaning is seen, it is not grasped like conceptual consciousness without grasping the apprehended meaning held by that sign, then if it is an object of the apprehended meaning, why rely on signs? It is merely the appearance of the thing's own nature. If it were not so, no one could be confused about signs, because even the root consciousness of animals and other beings who do not understand signs can grasp signs, so it would follow that everyone knows everything without relying on signs. Here, it is sufficient to have a mixed grasping of sound and meaning, and it is not necessary to be able to mix them, because merely being able to mix is not enough to combine names and things. Second, if all knowledge is conceptual, it would be too extreme, namely: the object and the aspects of the object cannot be experienced, and the self-characteristic of the object of action cannot be understood. First, it would follow that there is no self-awareness. Therefore, the consequences of being too extreme should be stated. Therefore, the reason for establishing non-conceptuality. First, without self-awareness, experience is not reasonable. This is the answer to refuting the fault. First, if seeing an object is seeing it with the concept "this is an object," then how can one see at that time what the consciousness that grasps that object is like? Because the conceptualization of seeing an object and the conceptualization of seeing the consciousness that grasps the object cannot exist at the same time. If it is said that the consciousness that grasps the object cannot be directly seen by one's own consciousness, then if it is undeniable that one experiences the aspect of the consciousness that says, "This object and the consciousness with the object have arisen in this way," how can one deny that one has not experienced it? In this discussion of terminology, there is no need to rely on reasons and history, etc., but by the power of experience, one can add or subtract from any object. If this does not become manifest, then blue will not become manifest to the eye consciousness either. Just as the experience of blue is manifest, there is no need to doubt the consciousness that arises in oneself. Since the fact that is not hidden has been established in this way, saying that there is no self-awareness is like holding something in one's hand and saying that I have not taken it.
