Because it does not depend on that, eye consciousness arises relying on the eye faculty and form, etc. For whatever momentary consciousness arises continuously, its immediately preceding condition is just whatever exists as the consciousness's own prior state, so there is no need to say more. The other cause is just these two, the faculty and the object, and no other factors such as memory are needed. Therefore, sense consciousness clearly grasps only the own-character of the object, and does not apprehend it mixed with universals. Therefore, it does not have any conceptual thought that has a universal as its object. Second, regarding the classification of the bases: The four types of non-conceptual direct perception are explained, which are the object to be eliminated, conceptual thought, is shown, and the conclusion is summarized. First, there are four types of direct perception: sense direct perception, mental direct perception, self-awareness direct perception, and yogic direct perception. First, refuting the term for sense consciousness and mistaken conceptual thought, refuting mistaken conceptual thought about the object of experience. First, there are two: debate and answer. First, if it is said that just as the sense faculty has the ability to generate direct perception consciousness, so do objects such as form, then why does the arising of consciousness depend on both the object and the faculty, and the consciousness that arises is described from the perspective of the faculty, but not distinguished from the perspective of the object? The second is the answer: Because it is seen that the term indicated from the perspective of the faculty makes the consciousness understood as uncommon, such a term must be applied. Because those who coin terms apply terms to make the object understood, they do not apply terms to things that cannot be understood, because coining terms is for the sake of understanding that thing. Therefore, the term indicated from the perspective of the faculty has the function of making it understood. For example, the consciousness arising from the five physical faculties is called sense consciousness, and in particular, it is called eye consciousness. Like this, if named from the perspective of the faculty, one can understand that the object of the term is that consciousness, but it is not so if named from the perspective of the object. If one says object consciousness and form consciousness, etc., it will become a name common to other minds as well. Therefore, applying such a term to consciousness, or rather, being suitable for application, is also the nature of the term itself, just as an earring is suitable for the ear. Therefore, the term named from the perspective of the faculty should be applied to these five consciousnesses, which is the sign of its nature, that is, the perspective of the faculty.

Therefore, the applied term can be applied to this subject—knowledge, because it is its indicator. For example, like the sound of a drum and a barley sprout, this is the nature of the sign. Such a term, which can apply to the nature that follows and pervades the indicator, because if reversed, then the indicator as the pervaded object will also be reversed. For example, whatever cannot be applied is not its indicator, such as applying eye consciousness as color consciousness, applying drum sound as the sound of a bamboo pole, and applying barley sprout as a sprout growing from the ground. In the contradictory aspect of such unapplicable things, the indicator is also impossible to exist. Whatever is an indicator must be applicable. Therefore, the Pramāṇasūtra says: "Because of the uncommon cause, its term is made by the sense faculties." Secondly, refuting the wrong conception of the object's own characteristic, refuting taking non-objects as objects. The former is to eliminate the reversed conceptualization of the meaning of the scriptures, and to establish it according to the meaning of the scriptures. The former is to prevent the meaning of the Sutra from being interpreted in other ways, and to explain the meaning of Vasubandhu's Sutra. Firstly, those who say that there is a general characteristic as the object of sense consciousness say that in the Abhidharma it is also said: "The five aggregates of consciousness are those that focus on accumulation." Moreover, the teacher Dignāga said in the Pramāṇasūtra: "Because it is produced by many meanings there, its own meaning is the object of the general characteristic." Therefore, the object of sense consciousness is the general characteristic, because the reason is that atoms are beyond sense consciousness, so they will never become the object of sense consciousness, so accumulation is the object of sense consciousness. Accumulation is only the collection of many dusts, so it is the general characteristic of the collection. Otherwise, the nature of each dust is no different from before, so it is unreasonable to become the object of sense consciousness, but this is the object of sense consciousness. Therefore, the sense consciousness that focuses on the general characteristic is the consciousness that has the general characteristic as its object, so undoubtedly, all sense consciousness is related to discrimination and recollection, because they take the general characteristic as their object. If you think so, it is not so, the general characteristic and the coarse appearance refer to other things that have become different from the dusts, and there is not the slightest substance that can produce sense consciousness. Then the accumul
