These undeniable self-natures, through reason that thoroughly investigates with the power of things themselves, measure the subtle inner grasper and grasped. The Mind-Only school considers the grasped aspect as the object to be measured, the grasping aspect as प्रमाण(pramāṇa,valid cognition), and self-awareness as the result. This alone, analyzing terminology, is the ultimate conclusion. Therefore, in explaining this, first, the Sautrāntika school, which asserts external objects, is asked, "What is meant by 'artha-vijñāna' (cognition of objects)?" In response to this, they say: "The direct perception of the mindstream of a person that distinctly cognizes blue, yellow, etc., is precisely that. What is there to ask about this?" Although it is true that there is nothing to ask about the direct perception of experiencing blue, etc., what is the reason that experiencing direct perception is considered to be the cognition of external objects such as blue? How does it cognize? In response to this, they say: "The external object, as the creator of the image, projects the image of the mind like a reflection in a mirror, and that image of the mind is similar to the external object, so it is considered that the mind cognizes the object." If one has not actually experienced the object, but only experiences something similar to it, then claiming that the mind cognizes the object would be mistaken. For example: "The eye-consciousness, which is a property, cognizes objects, because they are similar." If one establishes this, then merely because of similarity, the inference that one cognizes the similar object is erroneous. Because the object of similarity is never able to be experienced, so it must be inferred whether they are similar or not. Moreover, the way in which inference cannot establish it will be explained below. To this, the proponent of objects says: "What is there to argue about the existence of external objects? If there were no external objects, then what is the reason that forms, etc., are experienced as external objects distinct from inner consciousness through direct perception?" Experiencing the appearance of external objects distinct from the internal in this way is not asking you what it is, because this is established as undeniable and irrefutable for anyone. What I am asking is, if this appearance as external is also an image of consciousness, then how does it cognize the external object? Therefore, by analyzing the experience of the external, I want to know from you, so I am asking you. It is not asking me in return what the direct perception of experiencing the external is, because that is already established.

It is not appropriate to ask, presuming to have achieved it. Second, mere similarity does not accomplish the meaning. Even similarity cannot do it. Similarity, certainty, and the three gatherings are also not possible. First, the absence and presence of similarity are also confusing. First, like this, the proof of external objects is the reason of meaning. For those who think that the appearance of external objects appears in the mind, ask how this proves external objects. The answer is that the knowledge that is similar to the object can prove the existence of the external object. However, this appearance has not been established as similar to the external object. In this regard, if this appearance is similar to the external object, is it similar to the coarse external object or the subtle external object? If it is the former, then the external object like a vase is not a form of a single, coarse lump without parts, but it can distinguish the various parts. It is also not the nature of many becoming one, because it is contradictory. Moreover, just like the previous mere expression, when the extremely small objects beyond the senses meet, the senses produce a visible difference, just as each hair from a distance cannot become the object of the senses. However, the yak tail with many hairs gathered can produce the knowledge of the senses, which is undeniable, but this does not mean that the extremely small, which is not coarse, has become the object of the senses. Because two extremely small gatherings or more belong to the category of coarse, the appearance of indivisible dust can never be seen, so the appearance that appears in the mind is a coarse appearance, no matter how it is separated, until the appearance does not stop, it can only be seen as divisible, and it is impossible to appear indivisible subtle, so the external object, whether subtle or coarse, cannot appear, so if we examine the statement that the external object itself appears in knowledge, it will become separated from the meaning like demolishing the trees by the water. Even if the external object is not established, it is undeniable that the appearance of meanings such as blue is established, so the knowledge itself only appears here, which is established by the power of the thing itself. Therefore, the external object is not coarse. If the extremely small exists in an undivided state, then these extremely small are undivided, what reason makes it inconsistent with its own state, and when it appears in the mind like this, it appears coarse? What is the same about this coarse appearance and the nature of the external object's extremely small existence? That is to say, if combined, these dust appear coarse.
