Although there are differences in the powers of the senses, the senses themselves can never sever an object, just as a blacksmith may be skilled or unskilled, but the knife he makes can cut wood. Therefore, the main thing that measures an object is consciousness, not its cause, such as the senses. The second view is that validity and result are the same in essence, but differ only in function. That is, the thing that agrees with validity is considered valid because it has the function of understanding the measurable object, and therefore it is considered the result of validity. And the proof that it has the function of understanding the measurable object is merely that the nature of the measurable object appears manifestly in the mind. If one asks, "How does this blue cognition understand the blue object?" then, just as it is cut, it is proven that this object-possessor has the function of understanding the object, simply because the measurable blue is obtained. Just as one thinks that this axe has the function of cutting wood, it is impossible to find other proofs besides seeing the tree being cut down. Therefore, the agent and the object of worldly conventions also exist in this similar case, which cannot be denied. If it is not proven that the object-possessor has the function of understanding the object merely because the object appears, and there must be something else to prove that function, then the consciousness that is the measurer can never be related to the object it measures or the things to be done, such as blue, etc., because that measuring perception itself does not have the function of understanding the object, just like the senses, etc. If perception itself does not perform the function of understanding the object, then no other proof of understanding the object can be found in the three realms. If someone thinks, "Haven't you seen different actions such as rising and falling apart from the agent axe?" then the action of cutting that occurs when the axe and the tree meet is nothing other than the axe itself. If there were something else, then it would not be the axe that cuts the tree, but the other different action that cuts the tree, but such a situation has not been observed, so it is negated. The moment the axe is swung in the air, it cannot cut because it does not touch the tree, and the appearance of rising and falling is merely the manifestation of the moment of the axe of a different object, and it is not the observation of an action different from the axe, it is merely imputed from continuity. Therefore, swinging in the air, etc. is the cause through.

However, the actual function of cutting a tree is the moment of encountering the tree, and not anything else. Thus, the consciousness that is similar to or appears as things is also the nature of the fruit of valid cognition, which is the realization of things. Therefore, the fruit of valid cognition does not become something other than valid cognition itself. Here, the nature of things and the nature of what is to be measured are regarded as the same, and they are often spoken of together with the realization of things as the establisher and the to-be-established. In reality, the consciousness that appears as the nature of what is to be measured or of things is similar to things. But here, as if clinging to the object itself, without examining the object of the mind, this extremely subtle key is clearly explained here. Third, refuting and eliminating the argument that valid cognition and its fruit are the same: If being similar to things itself does not have other functions that are different from itself, then it is also unreasonable to be the agent itself. If it is reasonable to be cause and effect, then it will become the produced and the producer, thus losing its oneness. These two are not different cause and effect of the produced and the producer, but rather the causal relationship appears in terms of the agent and action that are separately established. Relying on worldly conventions, this is reasonable. How to understand it? The consciousness that takes things, forms, etc., as its own nature and holds them as its own object, that is, the consciousness that is similar to things, is undeniably established as performing the function of becoming the nature of realizing the thing to be measured. Therefore, for the function of valid cognition itself, that is, the thing to be measured, it appears as if it is accompanied by the function of realizing it. Therefore, it is both the agent of realizing the object and seems to have done the function of realizing the object. However, if one analyzes correctly, the nature that is similar to things is merely the arising of itself, and it is not the agent that does any function to other things. For the form, etc., of what is to be measured, it has not done anything either, because for things that exist simultaneously, there is no place to bestow benefit, so it does not act. For things that do not exist simultaneously, there is no object to act upon. Similarly, for the thing that is established as its own fruit, it does not act either, because there is no difference between the agent and the action. This is not limited to this, but it is the same for all causes and effects, that is, all phenomena have no agent. However, merely on the appearance of this condition, the three, agent, object, and action, are fabricated, as well as the produced and the producer.
