As stated in the Sutra: 'For the sake of realization with action, the result itself is the measurer, it is established as valid cognition, but it is not without function.' As such, these valid cognitions and results, which outsiders consider to be the cause and effect of the producer and the produced, are never reasonable. In our own system, they are merely cause and effect of designation. Furthermore, without investigation, in accordance with worldly convention, the three—valid cognition, result, and object of measurement—are established. And in accordance with the reality of things, after investigation, these three are established according to the treatises. Of these two, the first is: From the nature of the three—action, agent, and deed—these three are established, that is, what is to be realized or what is to be acted upon, the object, form, etc., is the object of measurement. What realizes is the appearance of the nature of form, etc., in the mind, which is the measuring valid cognition, which in this case is called 'similar to the meaning.' The action of that subject realizing the object is called 'realizing the meaning,' which is the result of valid cognition, or the result of valid cognition is realizing the meaning, which is generally known and established. Thus, a general explanation of the nature of the three—action, agent, and deed—is given. For example, in the world, any action is said to be accomplished by this thing, that is, it is established as the accomplisher, which is determined by the mutual dependence of that action and the agent at that time. Not all actions of the agent are established as the action of that time. All the accomplishers who are needed for those actions do not have to be regarded as the agents of that time. Rather, from the aspect of becoming the agent of that time, from which a certain result arises without interruption, or from the cause of designation, from which the result of what is to be designated is accomplished, that agent is established as the accomplisher of that action or result, otherwise all designations will be confused. Furthermore, if one agent can accomplish all actions, then everything will be accomplished everywhere. If one action requires all accomplishers, then none will be accomplished. Therefore, by distinguishing according to their respective shares, the terms of uncommon accomplisher and what is to be accomplished are made. The second is: From being similar to the meaning, the object of measurement is realized, others cannot do that, therefore those are the accomplishers.

Firstly, knowledge that resembles an object is the valid cognition that distinguishes "this is this object, this is that object." How does it resemble? Only when knowledge itself experiences "the object is like this" is it the essence of resembling the object, not in any other way. Such unerring knowledge, whose function as the subject possessing an object or the object to be measured, is to distinguish various different things, such as "this is like this, that is like that," and to establish them accordingly. For example, blue as the object to be measured, and the eye consciousness that cognizes blue is a valid cognition. Secondly, the Vaisheshikas and others say that objects are distinguished by the difference in whether the sense faculty encounters the object or not, and whether it is clear or not. But this is not correct. If the essence or nature of consciousness does not transform into the appearance of that object when the sense faculty encounters any object, then even if there are differences of similarity and dissimilarity in the causal sense faculty and so on, these differences alone cannot obtain or lack the differentiation of the function or object to be measured of difference itself. This cause does not necessarily determine the difference of each object, such as "this is this object, this is that object," because apart from consciousness itself, the cause of consciousness alone can never differentiate. Thirdly, since nothing other than knowledge that resembles the object can determine or establish "this is the object," therefore, from the different essence of this knowledge appearance, the judgment "this knowledge is understanding this object" arises, which is precisely the function or object to be measured of the object appearance or knowledge that resembles the object. This is certain and can be understood. Therefore, it is established that the object as a function is the valid cognition that proves its establishment. If someone thinks, why is this object appearance itself not the actual object, and why is it called "resembling the object"? This is because, from the object being close, a previously non-existent difference of appearance arises in knowledge, and this difference is the standard for measuring the object, therefore it is knowledge. Because the form of the object is grasped in a certain way, it is called "resembling the object." If even knowledge that resembles the object does not arise, then even if the object is close, what difference does the object make to knowledge? In reality, nothing is produced. If so, then knowledge cannot be the establisher of the object, because without the arising of blue-cognizing consciousness, one would not know "the blue object is here." If one thinks that one can directly grasp the naked object itself, then
