In the mind of a single individual, the nature of awareness, which is self-knowing and clear, is only one and does not transform into different continuums. Just as it was previously stated that one mind appears as many, but can still be regarded as one. Therefore, regarding the direct perception of sense consciousness and mental consciousness, there are four views: one is that they arise alternately; two is that after the first moment of sense direct perception, there is only mental direct perception; three is that sense direct perception arises at the end of the continuum; and four is that sense direct perception arises together with the continuum from the first moment, and finally, at the last moment of sense direct perception, the last moment of mental direct perception arises. Among these four views, only the last one should be accepted. Because for the existence of object-grasping mental direct perception, etc., there is no logical proof that can be established other than scripture. Although some texts say that the alternate arising of sense consciousness and mental consciousness is an extreme view, it is the mental consciousness that commonly knows all five objects such as form, otherwise the five sense consciousnesses cannot know anything other than their respective objects. When the eye does not look at the object and is closed, etc., just as there is no direct perception of eye consciousness, the other sense consciousnesses are also the same. How do the five sense consciousnesses see the self-characteristics of form, etc., and how do they later remember them? If that is not mental consciousness, then what is it? If, other than the five sense consciousnesses that see the object, there is no need for the mental consciousness that sees the object at that time, then there is no difference between the mental consciousness and the sense consciousnesses at that time. If one remembers something that others have experienced without having experienced it oneself, then that is too much. If one remembers because it is the same mental continuum, then the eye consciousness will also remember sound. If it is thought that sense consciousnesses do not remember each other because they each ascertain their own objects, then it is established that there is a mental direct perception that clearly sees the self-characteristics of the five objects such as form, because the consciousness that remembers how the five objects such as form were experienced is established by experience. Such a mental direct perception does not arise alternately with sense direct perception, because in the uninterrupted continuum of moments when the sense faculty and the object come together, the preceding consciousness is also the immediately preceding condition for the subsequent consciousness, and there is no lack of causes, so there is no obstacle to the continuous arising of sense direct perception. Since the sense consciousness and the appearing object are continuously apprehended, there is no reason to think that they arise alternately, or that only mental direct perception arises from the second moment onwards. If it is thought that at the end of the perfect continuum of sense direct perception, the moment of mental

If it is said that only one consciousness arises, and when the root consciousness manifests, the root consciousness obstructs the arising of the mental consciousness, then this is extremely absurd, because the eye continuously grasps various forms and colors, obstructing the opportunity for mental consciousness to arise, and ultimately the mental consciousness will not arise until the appearance of forms and colors has not ceased. If this is the case, then in the case of watching dances, etc., when the root consciousness arises continuously, at the end of the complete continuum of root consciousness, when does the mental consciousness arise that has not been obstructed by other root consciousnesses? This cannot be determined. If the mental consciousness only sees the moment of the object at the end of the root consciousness continuum and sees nothing else, then how can one remember the appearance of seeing the object for a long time? Such a moment is of no help at all, so in this way, it is acceptable to admit that there is no mental consciousness that clearly sees the five objects such as forms and colors. Therefore, it must be definitely admitted that root consciousness and mental consciousness are two kinds of direct perception. Although some people think that the simultaneous root consciousness and mental consciousness, the self-awareness part experienced simultaneously by one clear and aware wisdom, is the third kind of direct perception, but self-awareness exists in all consciousnesses, and even if its order is not counted, there is no contradiction, but the direct perception of root consciousness and mental consciousness is established by the scriptures as arising in two ways. They are not mutually obstructive, because no conflicting reason can be established, just as eye consciousness and ear consciousness arise simultaneously. These are just briefly stated. Even so, the determination of objects, forms, etc., is due to the power of root consciousness. Because the basis of these consciousnesses, the root itself, exists continuously from its own kind to its own kind, therefore, by the power of the consciousness arising from it, or relying on it, the mental consciousness can determine the object. Because the previous moment of consciousness has just ceased, and the mental consciousness and the root itself do not have such a separate basis, so the object, forms, etc., cannot be determined solely by the mental consciousness. This is because it must rely on the immediate cause of the root consciousness, so the determination of the object is named as being determined by the consciousness of the root. The reason why it is said that "eye consciousness is the measure that establishes that the object is blue" and not "mental consciousness establishes it" is because when determining that the object is blue, the root consciousness enters autonomously, while the mental consciousness must rely on that root consciousness, so it is established by it.
