If it is merely remembering the past, then all other memories should not be considered as direct perception, and the special characteristic of this memory being a valid cognition ( प्रमाण ,pramāṇa, प्रमाण ,measure) must be explained. Furthermore, if one grasps again what has already been decided, that is not reasonable, because the previous valid cognition has already completed the act of thoroughly deciding on that thing. For that which is to be measured or acted upon, which has no difference from the previous act that has been done or understood, how can the mind-direct perception, born from the senses such as the eye, or other mind-direct perceptions, be considered as the manifester, knower, or accomplisher of what was previously unknown? It is like how it is impossible to chop a tree again with an axe after it has already been felled. If the non-Buddhists think that, according to their view, the same permanent object can be known again and again by multiple valid cognitions, then the consciousness arising from the permanent object of apprehension should also arise simultaneously in all past and future moments, because the object of apprehension, which has no difference between past and future, is itself the producer of consciousness. If it is thought that even the same object of apprehension relies on the co-operative conditions of the senses and attention, etc., which occur sequentially in the past and future, and thus sequentially produces the consciousness that grasps itself, that is not reasonable, because the permanent object cannot be differentiated by other conditions, and therefore relying on those conditions other than itself is contradictory. Therefore, mind-direct perception does not grasp again what has already been decided by the senses, so there is no fault of it not being a valid cognition. Second, it is impossible to grasp again what has been grasped by the senses, therefore, the mind consciousness, which arises from the immediately preceding condition of the previous moment of the sense consciousness having just ceased, grasps the second moment, which is a different object from what was grasped by the previous sense-direct perception, so it is not a consequence that a blind person sees things, because without the immediately preceding condition of sense-direct perception, it will not arise. Third, refuting the fault of the object being uncertain. Refuting the fault of the sense object's cause and condition being impermissible. First, if the mind does not grasp the same object that was grasped by the previous sense-direct perception, then it cannot be certain that the sense-direct perception and the mind-direct perception are the same object, because the mind, which is the immediately preceding condition of the sense-direct perception, will also grasp other objects such as the end of the kalpa. If it is thought in this way, that is not correct, because the inference for oneself...

For example, after the three moments of sense faculty and consciousness, which are simultaneous with a blue object, have gathered, the first moment of blue apprehension arises immediately. The sense-manifestation of blue apprehension follows its own object, the previous moment. When the first moment of blue apprehension gathers with the blue moment that is simultaneous with itself, it is dependent on the object that is simultaneous with itself, that is, it gathers with it and generates mental manifestation, so when the first moment of blue apprehension generates mind, the object that is simultaneous with it is the cooperative condition for its generation of mental manifestation. Such a sense-born consciousness is the indispensable cause of the first moment of blue apprehension's mental manifestation. Therefore, the apprehended object of these mental manifestations is not the apprehended object of the first moment of blue apprehension's sense-manifestation, but the blue moment that is simultaneous with the first moment of blue apprehension, so even if it does not apprehend a moment other than the object of its own immediately preceding causal sense-manifestation, it is intended to necessarily apprehend the similar kind of the sense-manifestation's object, because mind only arises from the object that makes an appearance to the sense-manifestation. Therefore, the blue moment that is simultaneous with the first moment of blue apprehension is apprehended by both the second moment of blue apprehension's sense-manifestation and the first moment of mental manifestation, but because they are simultaneous, neither of them becomes a cut-off consciousness, but is established as valid cognition, for example, if one blue is simultaneously perceived by the valid cognition of two people's eye consciousnesses, both are valid cognition, and neither becomes a cut-off consciousness, or if one person simultaneously perceives sound and form, both manifest cognitions are valid cognition, or if two eyes, left and right, perceive one blue, it is similar to not being able to say that only one of them is valid cognition. If that is the case, since it is a consciousness in the continuum of one person who perceives one object, will it become one valid cognition? It will not become one valid cognition, even if only the object is not different, it is a consciousness that arises from different bases, like sound consciousness and form consciousness. Even though different consciousness entities are established because they arise from different continua, simultaneous arising
